The Double Vocation
Author: John M. Dunaway
Publisher: Summa Publications, Inc.
ISBN: 9781883479145
Category : Christian fiction, French
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
This study seeks to redefine the double role of those writers who have often been referred to as "French Catholic novelists." After a brief overview of the Catholic Renaissance movement in modern literature, three acknowledged geniuses in this "sub-genre" - Georges Bernanos, Francois Mauriac, and Julien Green - are meticulously reexamined in light of their Christian vocation. For the first time in English, the writings of the Franco-Russian novelist, Vladimir Volkoff, are also discussed in considerable detail. The book concludes with a theoretical chapter that raises troubling questions that apply to the "double vocation," namely: What is the distinctive character of fiction when it is written by a professing Christian? Are the two vocations of Christian and novelist fully compatible of mutually exclusive?

Educational Philosophy in the French Enlightenment
Author: Natasha Gill
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317145690
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 315
Book Description
Though Emile is still considered the central pedagogical text of the French Enlightenment, a myriad of lesser-known thinkers paved the way for Rousseau's masterpiece. Natasha Gill traces the arc of these thinkers as they sought to reveal the correlation between early childhood experiences and the success or failure of social and political relations, and set the terms for the modern debate about the influence of nature and nurture in individual growth and collective life. Gill offers a comprehensive analysis of the rich cross-fertilization between educational and philosophical thought in the French Enlightenment. She begins by showing how in Some Thoughts Concerning Education John Locke set the stage for the French debate by transposing key themes from his philosophy into an educational context. Her treatment of the abbé Claude Fleury, the rector of the University of Paris Charles Rollin, and Swiss educator Jean-Pierre de Crousaz illustrates the extent to which early Enlightenment theorists reevaluated childhood and learning methods on the basis of sensationist psychology. Etienne-Gabriel Morelly, usually studied as a marginal thinker in the history of utopian thought, is here revealed as the most important precursor to Rousseau, and the first theorist to claim education as the vehicle through which individual liberation, social harmony and political unity could be achieved. Gill concludes with an analysis of the educational-philosophical dispute between Helvétius and Rousseau, and traces the influence of pedagogical theory on the political debate surrounding the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1762.

Medieval Exegesis, vol. 3
Author: Henri de Lubac
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 1467466964
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 686
Book Description
For many years biblical scholars were convinced that the Middle Ages was marked by a so-called pre-critical understanding of the Bible, with only a handful of isolated exceptions -- like Andrew of St. Victor -- popping up as precursors of the historical-critical method. Here, however, Henri de Lubac draws on extensive documentation to demonstrate that even among the Victorines traditional exegesis involving an interplay between the literal and spiritual senses of Scripture is a constant throughout medieval exegesis. The one exception -- a radically important one, de Lubac readily admits -- was Joachim of Flora, whose doctrine is considered in the final chapter of this volume. This third English volume of de Lubac's monumental Medieval Exegesis covers volume 2, part 1 of his French volume and includes both the original Latin notes and an English version of the sources.

Aurores et crépuscules dans la Thébaïde de Stace
Author: Melissande Tomcik
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004537155
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
The open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. This book offers an intertextual study of dawn and dusk descriptions in Statius’ Thebaid. Poetic images such as rosy-fingered Dawn and the fiery chariot of the Sun sinking into the Ocean are the result of learned work on the previous literary tradition. The striking dawn and dusk descriptions in the Thebaid offer a perfect illustration of the way in which the traditional characteristics of the motif can be remodelled to produce new meaning. Each chapter in this monograph examines one of the aspects associated with dawns and dusks: formulaic diction, structuring role, relation to time and light, allegory.
