Book Description
Excerpt from Genealogy of the Descendants of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland, With Records of a Few Allied Families: Also War Records and Some Fragmentary Notes Pertaining to the History of Virginia, 1600-1902 There was a Walker family in Virginia (supposed to have come from England), prior to the coming of our ancestor, of which Dr. Thomas Walker of Castle Hill was probably the best known repre sentative. I am of the Opinion that he and our progenitor, J ohn Walker, were related my Opinion is based chiefly upon the fact of a similarity of Christian names in the two families, and then it will be remembered that soon after coming to America J ohn Walker and several members of his household left Chester County, Pennsylvania, where they had made a temporary home, and went down into Vir ginia and settled not far from the home of this Dr. Walker, Whose presence there was probably known to his kinsmen, if they were re lated, who were seeking homes in a new country. The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis (1592-1657), Emigrant to Gloucester, Virginia

The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis (1592-1657), Emigrant to Gloucester, Virginia PDF Author: Grace McLean Moses
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 080634542X
Category : Virginia
Languages : en
Pages : 70

Book Description
The Lewis Family of Warner Hall was perhaps the most influential family in Gloucester County, Virginia, during the colonial period. The subject of a widely respected family history by Merrow Edgerton Sorley, originally published in 1935 and reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Co., the Lewises of Warner Hall and their descendants have made notable contributions to Virginia and the nation. Since the original publication of Sorley's Lewis of Warner Hall, a debate has raged over the identity of the family's immigrant ancestor, whom Sorley presumed to be one ROBERT LEWIS of Wales. It was left to Mrs. Moses to show conclusively that Sorley was wrong and that the true immigrant ancestor of the Lewises of Warner Hall was JOHN LEWIS, who settled at Totopotomoys Creek in Gloucester County, Virginia on July l, 1653. In her vitally important little book The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis (1592-1657), originally published in 1984, Mrs. Moses traces back the Welsh side of the Lewis family for three generations in the vicinity of its ancestral home in Llangatock, Breconshire, and also resolves a number of issues surrounding the authenticity of the family coat-of-arms.
