Book Description
The aim of this book is to provide information about performing experi ments at low temperatures, as well as basic facts concerning the low tem perature properties of liquid and solid matter. To orient the reader, I begin with chapters on these low temperature properties. The major part of the book is then devoted to refrigeration techniques and to the physics on which they are based. Of equal importance, of course, are the definition and measurement of temperature; hence low temperature thermometry is extensively discussed in subsequent chapters. Finally, I describe a variety of design and construction techniques which have turned out to be useful over the years. The content of the book is based on the three-hour-per-week lecture course which I have given several times at the University of Bayreuth between 1983 and 1991. It should be particularly suited for advanced stu dents whose intended masters (diploma) or Ph.D. subject is experimental condensed matter physics at low temperatures. However, I believe that the book will also be of value to experienced scientists, since it describes sev eral very recent advances in experimental low temperature physics and technology, for example, new developments in nuclear refrigeration and thermometry.

Book Description
Excerpt from Low Temperature Thermometry: Interim Report Earlier acoustical thermometer 'speed of sound' isotherms are compared with recent measurements. Where systematic deviations had appeared in smoothing through acoustically derived temperatures via germanium thermometers, a possible solution has emerged; more precise temperature control of the acoustical thermometer is desirable and has been realized. A cursory examination of the applicability of the Helmholtz - Kirchhoff equation was made with a modified sonic chamber. Measurements with the modified instrument have shown no changes in the experimental results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Temperature, Second Edition gives a comprehensive account of the principles of thermometry over the range 0.5 K to about 3000 K. The book focuses on various topics on the field of thermometry such as the full description of the ITS-90, its practical application and preparation; accounts of total radiation thermometry and acoustic gas thermometry using spherical resonators; and the development of sealed cells for the realization of fixed points. The construction and use of high-temperature platinum resistance thermometers; introduction of the use of gold-platinum thermocouple; and the calibration and practical application of radiation thermometers are discussed as well. Physicists, engineers, researchers, and students will find the book a good reference.

Cryogenics and Measurement of Properties of Solids at Low Temperatures

Cryogenics and Measurement of Properties of Solids at Low Temperatures PDF Author: R. Srinivasan
Publisher: Allied Publishers
ISBN: 8184243065
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
Low temperature research has become fairly widespread in the country after the availability of closed cycle refrigerators. It is opportune to write a book for students and researchers in India on production of low temperatures and techniques for the measurement of physical properties of materials at such temperatures. This book is an effort in this direction. The first part of the book discusses methods for producing temperatures down to 1.8 K. There is a fairly extensive discussion on different types of closed cycle refrigerators. The behaviour of properties of materials relevant in Cryogenics is dealt with in some detail. Useful tips on construction of cryostats are given. Thermometry is discussed extensively. The second part of the book deals with digital measuring techniques. Details of experimental methods for measuring thermal and electrical properties, point contact tunneling, scanning probe microscopy, and noise at low temperatures are discussed. This part of the book is born out of the rich personal experience in such measurements of one of the authors (AKR). There is an appendix on vacuum techniques. The book can be used for teaching an elective course in Low Temperature Physics at the M.Sc. level. It will be useful for researchers in Low Temperature Physics.
