"For its key role in achieving high data rates, the need to develop a low-complexity channel estimator is one of the main targets in the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) research development. With high-mobility users in LTE-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (LTE-OFDM) systems, channel estimator design becomes a challenging problem, since the estimator needs to estimate more channel parameters than in slow fading channels, which may make the channel estimation impractical. A low-complexity channel estimator is developed for LTE high-mobility systems based on the Piecewise Linear (PWL) model and the channel time-frequency correlation relationships. The channel estimator and interpolator is tested under different LTE channel models for various mobile velocities and showed an improvement in the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance from 6% to 2% compared to the conventional linear interpolation technique with only 33.2% increase in the required processing time for a doppler frequency of 300 Hz. The proposed interpolation technique is insensitive to the change in the mobile velocity to some extent; this makes the channel estimator more practical and robust to any change in the channel statistics."--Page ii.

In addition to this the performances of these three channel estimation techniques were also studied by introducing averaging, interpolation and hybrid methods. This work also investigates the complexity of the channel estimation techniques in terms of the number of complex multiplications and by varying the FFT size and number of CP. furthermore, the effect of varying the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver ends, where 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 antenna arrangements are considered as a case studies. The performance of these channel estimation techniques is also studied for EVA standard channel model in LTE. The considered channel model is EVA standard channel model with Doppler shift of 300HZ. Simulation results in this thesis show that the ML channel estimation technique has the best performance. In terms of number of complex multiplications it is proved the ML has lower complexity. From the interpolating techniques it is shown the performance of the algorithm integrated with hybrid technique has the best performance. In addition to this it is shown that as the number of transmit and receive antennas increase from 2 x 2 to 4 x 4 the performance of the estimator increases.

This volumes discusses various aspects regarding the capacity/achievable data rate of stationary Rayleigh fading channels. First, it analyses bounds on the achievable data rate with zero-mean proper Gaussian input symbols, which are capacity achieving in the coherent case, i.e., in case of perfect channel knowledge at the receiver. These bounds are tight in the sense that the difference between the upper and the lower bound is bounded for all SNRs. The lower bound converges to the coherent capacity for asymptotically small channel dynamics. Furthermore, these bounds are extended to the case of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and to the case of frequency selective channels. In a further part, the present work studies the achievable rate with receivers based on synchronized detection and a code-aided channel estimation. For a specific type of such a receiver an approximate upper bound on the achievable rate is derived. The comparison of this approximate upper bound and the achievable data rate with receivers using synchronized detection based on a solely pilot based channel estimation gives an approximate upper bound on the possible gain by using this kind of code-aided channel estimation in comparison to the conventional receiver using a solely pilot based channel estimation. In addition, the achievable data rate with an optimal joint processing of pilot and data symbols is studied and a lower bound on the achievable rate for this case is derived. In this context, it is also shown which part of the mutual information of the transmitter and the receiver is discarded when using the conventional receiver with synchronized detection based on a solely pilot based channel estimation.
