Book Description
"I'm going to break you." Those were the words Lola feared most, from the man she feared most. She ran...she ran until she could run no more, and as soon as she stopped, he broke her. The tough shell was gone, her disguise ripped to shreds, and all that was left behind was a damaged girl who felt lost, raw and exposed. "He broke me." Three words that would haunt Drew King until the day he died. He'd always watched Lola from afar, too tainted and scarred to be anything more than a quiet shadow. Then came the night she fell into his arms, bleeding, dying, broken. That night started a fire in his soul, the burning heat of rage reared its ugly head, and on that night, Drew vowed he would battle with the devil himself to make sure his little mouse was never broken again. This book contains graphic violence, language which some may find offensive and sexual content. It also touches on the subject of rape and may contain triggers for survivors of sexual assault. The Affective Turn

The Affective Turn PDF Author: Patricia Ticineto Clough
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822389606
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
“The innovative essays in this volume . . . demonstrat[e] the potential of the perspective of the affects in a wide range of fields and with a variety of methodological approaches. Some of the essays . . . use fieldwork to investigate the functions of affects—among organized sex workers, health care workers, and in the modeling industry. Others employ the discourses of microbiology, thermodynamics, information sciences, and cinema studies to rethink the body and the affects in terms of technology. Still others explore the affects of trauma in the context of immigration and war. And throughout all the essays run serious theoretical reflections on the powers of the affects and the political possibilities they pose for research and practice.”—Michael Hardt, from the foreword In the mid-1990s, scholars turned their attention toward the ways that ongoing political, economic, and cultural transformations were changing the realm of the social, specifically that aspect of it described by the notion of affect: pre-individual bodily forces, linked to autonomic responses, which augment or diminish a body’s capacity to act or engage with others. This “affective turn” and the new configurations of bodies, technology, and matter that it reveals, is the subject of this collection of essays. Scholars based in sociology, cultural studies, science studies, and women’s studies illuminate the movement in thought from a psychoanalytically informed criticism of subject identity, representation, and trauma to an engagement with information and affect; from a privileging of the organic body to an exploration of nonorganic life; and from the presumption of equilibrium-seeking closed systems to an engagement with the complexity of open systems under far-from-equilibrium conditions. Taken together, these essays suggest that attending to the affective turn is necessary to theorizing the social. Contributors. Jamie “Skye” Bianco, Grace M. Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The award-winning novel of a young American girl in France—hailed as “an impressive debut” that is “written with quiet, lyric forcefulness” (Elle). A New York Times Notable Book Young, inexperienced, and fleeing a terrible personal loss, Rosie—the new au pair to the Tivot family estate in France—finds herself ill at ease when trying to connect with Nicole, the cool, distant, and beautifully polished mother of the three children she cares for. There is something about the woman that both fascinates and unnerves Rosie. The same is true of the rest of the Tivot clan. Nicole’s dissatisfied husband, Marc, and their children all seem to be caught in an unending struggle against each other for love and acceptance. Only when Rosie is sent to care for Nicole’s now-elderly guardian—the storyteller of the family’s secrets—does she finally discover the truth. There, Rosie will learn of a past darkened by war, duplicity, and a tragedy that still resonates in the Tivot’s lives . . . With this novel of family, betrayal, and the naïveté of youth, Lily King has spun a story that is “powerful . . . splendid . . . [and all] so assured that it’s hard to believe the book itself is her debut” (The New York Times Book Review). “Expertly constructed, full of surprises, superbly paced and sweetly sad, King’s book hardly reads like a first novel.” —Publishers Weekly
