Este libro surge de un encuentro científico en la Alhambra acerca de la conveniencia de organizar un "convegno" en torno al palacio de Carlos V y de forma más concreta sobre el papel del patio circular, "il cortile tondo", en la arquitectura del Renacimiento. Aquella propuesta tuvo el apoyo inmediato del Patronato de la Alhambra y la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía. Fue organizado por el proyecto de investigación europeo RENEU. Entre la casa de Mantegna en Mantua y el palacio de la Alhambra una constelación de proyectos por toda Europa invitaban a una reflexión sobre este tipo compositivo que tiene en el palacio imperial una de las mayores referencias en su época.
