Structure And Dynamics Of Nonlinear Waves In Fluids: Proceedings Of The Iutam/isimm Symposium

Structure And Dynamics Of Nonlinear Waves In Fluids: Proceedings Of The Iutam/isimm Symposium PDF Author: K Kirchgassner
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814549770
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 430

Book Description
This symposium brought together mechanicians, physicists and applied mathematicians to discuss the interdisciplinary topic of nonlinear wave motion, which displays effects that give rise to a multitude of unanswered questions. Nonlinear waves in fluids in particular display all the prominent nonlinear phenomena such as chaos, turbulence and pattern formation. Amongst the topics emphasized in these proceedings are: travelling fronts, solitary waves and periodic waves (dissipative and conservative); temporal and spatial asymptotics of perturbations of waves; bifurcations, stability and local dynamics of waves; interaction between different waves, and between waves and the mean flow; wave breaking, nonlinear effects on focussing and diffraction; modulation and envelope equations (their derivation and validity); and numerical and experimental results.

15th International Meeting on Thermodiffusion

15th International Meeting on Thermodiffusion PDF Author: Diversos autores
Publisher: PUBLICACIONS UNIVERSITAT ROVIRA I VIRGILI
ISBN: 841365081X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
The International Meeting on Thermodiffusion provides a unique opportunity for sharing ideas about theoretical, experimental and numerical results on diffusion- and thermodiffusion related research. The successful series of IMT meetings aims to provide a forum for discussion, face-to-face interaction between scientists and technologists, and a mechanism for developing new collaborations. The IMT15 is aimed to discuss the latest results on transport properties in multicomponent fluids: innovative theoretical approaches, new experimental results and techniques as well as state of the art numerical methods. The most fundamental aspect of the conference will be the discussion amongst scientists, the sharing of ideas and creating new and reinforced existing collaborations.

Hydrodynamic Instabilities

Hydrodynamic Instabilities PDF Author: François Charru
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139500546
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 411

Book Description
The instability of fluid flows is a key topic in classical fluid mechanics because it has huge repercussions for applied disciplines such as chemical engineering, hydraulics, aeronautics, and geophysics. This modern introduction is written for any student, researcher, or practitioner working in the area, for whom an understanding of hydrodynamic instabilities is essential. Based on a decade's experience of teaching postgraduate students in fluid dynamics, this book brings the subject to life by emphasizing the physical mechanisms involved. The theory of dynamical systems provides the basic structure of the exposition, together with asymptotic methods. Wherever possible, Charru discusses the phenomena in terms of characteristic scales and dimensional analysis. The book includes numerous experimental studies, with references to videos and multimedia material, as well as over 150 exercises which introduce the reader to new problems.

Fundamentals of Two-Fluid Dynamics

Fundamentals of Two-Fluid Dynamics PDF Author: Daniel D. Joseph
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461392934
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 489

Book Description
Two-fluid dynamics is a challenging subject rich in physics and prac tical applications. Many of the most interesting problems are tied to the loss of stability which is realized in preferential positioning and shaping of the interface, so that interfacial stability is a major player in this drama. Typically, solutions of equations governing the dynamics of two fluids are not uniquely determined by the boundary data and different configurations of flow are compatible with the same data. This is one reason why stability studies are important; we need to know which of the possible solutions are stable to predict what might be observed. When we started our studies in the early 1980's, it was not at all evident that stability theory could actu ally work in the hostile environment of pervasive nonuniqueness. We were pleasantly surprised, even astounded, by the extent to which it does work. There are many simple solutions, called basic flows, which are never stable, but we may always compute growth rates and determine the wavelength and frequency of the unstable mode which grows the fastest. This proce dure appears to work well even in deeply nonlinear regimes where linear theory is not strictly valid, just as Lord Rayleigh showed long ago in his calculation of the size of drops resulting from capillary-induced pinch-off of an inviscid jet.

IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Waves in Multi-Phase Flow

IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Waves in Multi-Phase Flow PDF Author: H.-C. Chang
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401719969
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
The active field of multi-phase flow has undergone fundamental changes in the last decade. Many salient complex interfacial dynamics of such flows are now understood at a basic level with precise mathematical and quantitative characterization. This is quite a departure from the traditional empirical approach. At an IUTAM Symposium at Notre Dame, in 1999, some of the leading researchers in the field gathered to review the progress thus far and to contemplate future directions. Their reports are summarized in this Proceedings. Topics covered include solitary wave dynamics on viscous film flows, sheet formation and drop entrainment in stratified flow, wetting and dewetting dynamics, self-similar drop formation dynamics, waves in bubbly and suspension flow, and bubble dynamics. It is a unique and essential reference for applied mathematicians, physicists, research engineers, and graduate students to keep abreast of the latest theoretical and numerical developments that promise to transform multi-phase flow research.
