Book Description
This report describes the post-construction evaluation of the fast track pavement in Sterling, Colorado. The field evaluation consisted of visual inspection, fault measurement, profile measurement and distress survey. A set of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements was also acquired to assess the structural responses and to evaluate load transfer efficiency between the slabs. The results of this study demonstrated that fast track concrete can be as durable as the conventional concrete pavement. After seven years of being in service the pavement has shown no sign of fatigue, only some minor distresses unrelated to fast track techniques.

Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado

Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado PDF Author: Yunping Xi
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Concrete bridges
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has been a significant problem for many state and transportation agencies since the application of deicing salts was introduced. Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.

Long-range Cost Estimation Research Project

Long-range Cost Estimation Research Project PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Highway engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
The purpose of this project was to research long-range (parametric) cost estimation at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), utilizing AASHTO's Trns.port Cost Estimation and Decision Support software. Info Tech, Inc., analysis reviewed CDOT's current long-range estimation practices and identified revisions which would be needed to satisfactorily meet CDOT's future cost estimating requirements, i.e., in order to develop consistent and reliable cost estimates when little is known about a project. Both item and contract classifications utilized by CDOT in BAMS/DSS were revised to reflect more logical functional groupings. The new contract work type and item classification were used directly to develop an Interim Solution for Long-Range Cost Estimation that uses historical bid-based default prices. Info Tech analysts also researched Internet sources to identify the availability of major item cost data at the regional and national level, including data for multimodal project types.

I-76 Truck Study

I-76 Truck Study PDF Author: David A. Price
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Interstate 76 (Colo. and Neb.)
Languages : en
Pages : 62

Book Description
Portions of the driving lane on I-76 located in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 4 are seriously distressed. To help prolong the life of the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Region 4 has placed signs advising truckers to use the passing lane between Roggen and the Nebraska state line [approximately 140 miles (225 km)]. A test section well within the signed test area advising the truckers to use the passing lane and a control section just prior to the signed area were established and evaluated over a four year period. Roughness data taken with an Ames Profilograph, slab faulting measured with a Georgia fault meter, and overall physical pavement distress were noted and used as a comparison between driving lane and passing lane within the two sections.

Determining the Degree of Aggregate Degradation After Using the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester

Determining the Degree of Aggregate Degradation After Using the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester PDF Author: Randolph Reyes
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aggregates (Building materials)
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
The purpose of the research conducted was to determine if aggregate degradation takes place and to measure the possible degree of degradation after bituminous mixtures are heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. A study was conducted which compared the original aggregate blend (control specimens) to the residual aggregate blend (experimental specimens) obtained after several bituminous mixtures were heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. The control specimens and the experimental specimens used to produce the bituminous mixtures were the result of an aggregate sample which was split three times. Two methods of analysis were used to review the gradation results.

HBP Pilot Void Acceptance Projects in Region 2 in 1997

HBP Pilot Void Acceptance Projects in Region 2 in 1997 PDF Author: Bud A. Brakey
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Pavements, Bituminous
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
Summaries and analyses of three Void Acceptance (VA) projects are reported and compared with previous VA and quality assurance and quality control (QA & QC) projects. For two of the three projects, the voids filled with asphalt (VFA) averaged 77% (design criteria was 65-75%) and percent air voids (AV) averaged 3.2% (design target was 4.0%). Because compacted bulk specific gravity field tests were higher than lab-mixed design values, for all processes, field AV and voids in mineral aggregate (VMA) averaged 0.4% below design values. VMA was easily met after field targets were adjusted.
