Book Description
As an attempt to assist low-income families in the U.S., over 100 governmental units (i.e., cities, counties, universities) have implemented living wage ordinances.A living wage is enacted by legislation requiring employers to pay a certain wage above the federal or state minimum wage; living wages are tied to meeting some standard of living and only apply to businesses funded by the government. A history of the living wage is provided, including a description of some of the drivers influencing the creation of a living wage (i.e., greater economic disparity between the classes).Oppositional views to the living wage (i.e., unconstitutional) are also presented and discussed. The current utilization of the living wage is explored, as are the benefits covered by many living wage ordinances and the penalties for businesses in violation of living wage ordinances. Finally, the implications of living wage ordinances on small businesses, which are more likely than large businesses to pay the minimum wage, are discussed, and a list of questions are provided for small firm owners to consider should they be affected by living wage legislation.(AKP).
