Book Description
The objective of this study was to examine reproductive indices in fish collected from the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave rivers and their major tributaries. The fish species targeted for collection and analyses were burbot, northern pike, longnose sucker, and flathead chub. Biochemical and histological approaches included analysing levels of gonadal sex steroid hormones, measuring gonad morphology, and estimating fecundity. Results are organised in to reference (upstream locations and tributaries receiving no inputs from pulp mills), near-field (within 100 kilometres downstream from a pulp mill source), and far-field (over 100 kilometres downstream) groups.

Book Description
Vitamin A (retinoids) and E (tocopherol) have received increasing attention as possible indicators of exposure to a variety of environmental pollutants. This study examines vitamin A and E indices in fish collected from northern Alberta rivers, where fish are exposed to a variety of industrial effluents, as part of a multi-faceted study into altered fish physiological function due to environmental contaminants. The fish species targeted for collection were burbot, northern pike, and longnose sucker. The investigators conducted biochemical analyses in the laboratory to determine levels of retinol, dehydroretinol, retinyl palmitate (three storage forms of vitamin A), beta carotene (precursor form of vitamin A), and tocopherol in fish livers. For comparison, results are organised into reference (upstream locations and tributaries receiving no input from pulp mills), near-field (within 100 kilometres downstream from a pulp mill source), and far-field (over 100 kilometres downstream) groups, where sample sizes were adequate.

Analysis for Liver Mixed Function Oxidase in Fish, Upper Athabasca River, 1992

Analysis for Liver Mixed Function Oxidase in Fish, Upper Athabasca River, 1992 PDF Author: W. Lyle Lockhart

Book Description
Aquatic fauna of northern Alberta rivers are exposed to contaminants from municipal and industrial sources, including pulp mills. Studies of sub-lethal effects such as increased levels of enzyme activity can indicate an early response to environmental stress in these fauna. This paper reports on a project conducted to examine mixed function oxygenase activity in fish collected from six sites on the upper Athabasca River, upstream and downstream from the Hinton bleached kraft mill. The investigators applied two enzyme assays to fish liver samples collected from mountain whitefish, longnose sucker, northern pike, and white sucker. Enzyme activities were compared with contaminant residue levels and sex steroid hormones reported for the same fish in other related studies. Results presented compare levels of chlorinated dioxin and furan residues in the fish with the site-by-site pattern of enzyme activity.

Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper

Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper PDF Author: Mark R. Servos
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000725138
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 724

Book Description
In recent years, there have been emerging concerns regarding the fate and effects of pulp and paper mill effluents on the environment. Countries throughout the world are focusing attention on the implementation of regulatory and monitoring programs. In response, industry has begun to implement a variety of process and treatment technologies designed to minimize or eliminate the potential impacts. Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents explores the most active and critical current research and experimentation from around the world. This comprehensive overview examines the identity and origin of chemicals in pulp mill effluents, environmental fate of chemicals from pulp and paper mills, bioaccumulation of substances from pulp mills to fish and wildlife, field and laboratory studies of biochemical and whole organism responses associated with pulp and paper effluents, integrated monitoring and future research, and policy directions of this rapidly evolving field. Written by prominent scientists from around the world with contributions from industry, government, and academia, this important new book provides a balanced global perspective of the recent scientific findings and the challenges being faced in the immediate future.

Microwave Effects on DNA and Proteins

Microwave Effects on DNA and Proteins PDF Author: Chris D. Geddes
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319502891
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
For several years, researchers have been reporting the effects of microwave radiation/heating on both the structure and function of DNA, RNA and proteins. For the most part, favourable accelerated biological functions are observed as microwave induced heating occurs, but other not-so favourable effects are also observed, such as denaturation, fragmentation and the so called and ill-explained, non-thermal microwave effects. This volume, the first of its kind, brings researchers together from around the world to discuss their current findings and thinking on the effects of Microwaves on Biological systems, particularly DNA, RNA and proteins, in the form of contributed edited chapters.

Accumulation of Fish Mixed Function Oxygenase Inducers by Semipermeable Membrane Devices in River Water and Effluents, Athabasca River, August and September, 1994

Accumulation of Fish Mixed Function Oxygenase Inducers by Semipermeable Membrane Devices in River Water and Effluents, Athabasca River, August and September, 1994 PDF Author: Joanne Louise Parrott
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Effluent quality
Languages : en
Pages : 54

Book Description
Reports on a study that used semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) to identify industrial effluents along the Athabasca River system that induce mixed function oxygenase (MFO) activity in fish cell lines. These SPMDs provided samples of known exposure time in effluents and river waters by simultaneously sampling the effluent stream and the river upstream and downstream of the mixing zone at each site. The investigators deployed the SPMDs for two weeks at one major town and five industrial wastewater sites (four pulp mills and one oil sands facility) on the Athabasca, and at one pulp mill on the Lesser Slave River. They tested SPMD extracts for MFO activity using cell culture techniques in top minnow (Poeciliopsis lucida) hepatoma cells. Results presented include comparisons of MFO induction potency between different sampling sites and between type of effluent source.

Sediment Quality Assessment

Sediment Quality Assessment PDF Author: Graeme Batley
Publisher: CSIRO PUBLISHING
ISBN: 1486303862
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Contaminated sediments represent an ongoing threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of sediment quality is, therefore, an important concern for environmental regulators. Sediment quality guidelines are now well established in regulatory frameworks worldwide; however, practical guidance that covers all of the key aspects of sediment quality assessment is not readily available. In 2005, CSIRO published its highly cited Handbook for Sediment Quality Assessment. In the ensuing period, the science has advanced considerably. This practical guide is a revised and much expanded second edition, which will be a valuable tool for environmental practitioners. Written by experts in the field, it provides coverage of: sediment sampling; sample preparation; chemical analysis; ecotoxicology; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; and ecological assessment. In addition, detailed appendices describe protocols for many of the tests to be used.
