Book Description
Excerpt from The Art-Literature Readers, Vol. 2: Book Two Robert Louis Stevenson never forgot that he was once a little boy. He always remembered what happy times he used to have and what he used to play. He remembered how he liked to go up in a swing Up in the air so blue. He remembered that in winter he dressed by yellow candle-light, before the sun was up. In summer when the days were long, he went to bed before the day was done. Mr. Stevenson wrote a book about the things he did when he was a boy. He called it A Child's Garden of Verses. He wrote this verse about himself: I woke before the morning, I was happy all the day, I never said an ugly word, but smiled and stuck to play. Book Description
Excerpt from English Literature, Vol. 2 HE play, unlike the novel, is the most rigid Of literary forms, with the exception perhaps of the sonnet. In a novel the author has an almost free hand. He can tell his story quite objectively, he can make himself the hero, he can translate his characters most secret thoughts. He can make his novel a hundred, or five hundred, pages in length, and his story can last twenty-four years or as many hours. But the dramatist has no such easy task. He has to present a story within certain dimensions he cannot avail himself of the almost unlimited fields of the novel and of the film. Practical considerations play an important part. In the first place, because it is presenting rather than relating a fact, a play must be confined to a certain length, for the reason that no audience can Sit still for more than a few hours. In the second place, the characters have to speak for themselves, their motives and thoughts have to be made clear by their actions. And now, since the school Of naturalism has won the day, they are not even allowed the Simple, though sometimes ridiculous device, of the soliloquy, by which, in talking to himself, a character tells the audience facts necessary for the development Of the plot. Even the place of action is limited by the inability of the stage-hands to change more than a certain number of scenes in a given time, and by the more crude considerations of cost. Book Description
Excerpt from Course of Lectures, Vol. 2 of 2: On Dramatic Art and Literature A new epoch of French Tragedy begins with Voltaire, whose first appearance on the theatre, in his early youth, followed dose upon the age of Louis the Fourteenth. I have already, in a general way, alluded to the changes and enlargements which he projected, and partly carried into execution. Corneille and Racine may be said to have led a true artist's life: they were dramatic poets with their whole soul; their desire, as authors, was confined to that object alone, and all their studies were directed to the stage.
