Book Description
Excerpt from Highways Byways in Literature "There is no trace in literature of what we now understand by the word 'love' earlier than the end of the fourth century B.C." So wrote the late Mr E. F. M. Benecke in the posthumous "Fragment printed for the Use of Scholars," entitled Antimachus of Colophon and the Position of Women in Greek Poetry. The object of the work is to prove the proposition contained in the sentence quoted, and to suggest that love in its modern sense was introduced into literature by Antimachus. What Antimachus did or did not do is hard to say, for practically all that remains of him is half a dozen lines from an elegy; some sixty scattered lines from his epic, the Thebais; and a charming little epigram in the Greek Anthology. Two other epigrams speak of him as next to Homer in poetic rank, and several authors, among them Cicero, Plutarch, and Quintilian, allude to him. Mr Benecke, however, like other English scholars, was not deterred by the scantiness of his materials from undertaking to spin a very big theory. Book Description
Excerpt from Byways in Bookland: Confessions and Digressions The pages which follow make no pretension to literary criticism; they are a simple record of happy and memorable hours spent in the com pany of favourite books, and a tribute of grati tude to their authors. Books have been my companions from boyhood; and if the record here traced is only the means of introducing a few other boys to such congenial society, I shall not be ashamed of having been egotistic enough to set down some of my own impressions and. Highways and Byways in Shakespeare's Country (Classic Reprint)

Highways and Byways in Shakespeare's Country (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: W. H. Hutton

Book Description
Excerpt from Highways and Byways in Shakespeare's Country The writer of this book undertook his pleasant task, with a light and happy heart, more than four years ago. He had known Shakespeare's country for nearly forty years, and wandered about in it, whenever he could, in many a holiday. He looked forward to setting down, very quickly, what he had seen, and should see, for the first time or again, of the heart of England, that he might, if he had good fortune, hand on to others something of the pleasure which had been his for so many years. But new work came to him unexpectedly, and only at long intervals could he take up again his travels or his pen. For a long time a bookcase has been stored with the literature of his subject, from the immortal Dugdale down, through the Rev. Thomas Cox, of 1700, to the latest voyager on the banks of Avon, and the Warwickshire table has been the name of a desk consecrated to his task. At last it is finished; but it is with a sigh that the pen is laid down, the books put away, the feet no longer turned towards Warwick ways. Book Description
Excerpt from Highways and Byways in the Border In preparing a second edition of "Highways and Byways in The Border," I cannot refrain from acknowledging with deep appreciation the very great compliment that has been paid to me by the many kindly critics who, when reviewing the book, selected for commendation, as being "characteristically Andrew Lang," passages of which at least ninety per cent, were not written till many months after my brother's death, and none of which he ever saw. On the other hand, a certain number of sentences that came from his pen have been ascribed to me. As a matter of fact, something less than one-tenth of the book is by my brother, and we never had the opportunity of going over together the little that was written prior to his death; nor did he ever see any of the MS. except that portion which came from his own pen. I have been taken to task for careless spelling of the surname Elliot. It is not always easy to say to which branch of the great Border clan a particular individual may belong; but if one may judge from the familiar old rhyme, I do not think I have gone greatly astray. Its ordinary version runs: " Double L and single T, Elliots of Min to and Wolflee. Double T and single L, The Eliotts they in Stobs that dwell Single L and single T, Eliots of St. Germains be. But double L and double T, The de'il may ken wha they may be." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Worldly Ways and Byways By Eliot Gregory The aspiring nobles and ambassadors, harassed by this constant preoccupation, had little time or inclination left for any serious pursuit, since, to take a moment's repose or an hour's breathing space was to risk falling behind in the endless and aimless race. Strange as it may appear, the knowledge that they owed place and preferment more to chance or intrigue than to any personal merit or inherited right, instead of lessening the value of the prizes for which all were striving, seemed only to enhance them in the eyes of the competitors. Book Description
Byways of Ghost-Land: Large Print By Elliott O'Donnell At first I was inclined to attribute my memory to a dream. 'Absurd!' I said to myself. 'Such things cannot have occurred. I am in bed; I know I am!' Then I endeavoured to move my arms to feel the counterpane; I could not; my arms were bound, tightly bound to my side. A cold sweat burst out all over me. Good God! was it true? I tried again; and the same thing happened--I could not stir. Again and again I tried, straining and tugging at my sides till the muscles on my arms were on the verge of bursting, and I had to desist through utter exhaustion. I lay still and listened to the beating of my heart. Then, I clenched my toes and tried to kick. I could not; my feet were ruthlessly fastened together.
