Les 1 000 premiers jours de vie, de la conception aux 2 ans de l'enfant, représentent une période fondamentale dans le développement de l'être humain, liée à l'implantation du microbiote. Chacun possède un microbiote différent et spécifique. Divers facteurs rencontrés lors de cette période influencent la composition de cette flore. Ainsi, dès la conception, l'équilibre des microbiotes vaginaux, placentaires et utérins de la femme enceinte est nécessaire. Le mode d'accouchement, puis le type d'alimentation modifient la cinétique d'implantation de la flore, notamment intestinale, du nouveau-né. C'est à l'âge de 2 ans que l'on considère le microbiote du nourrisson comme équilibré et semblable à celui de l'adulte. De la conception aux 2 ans du nouveau-né, la femme enceinte ainsi que le jeune enfant sont considérés comme fragiles. Il apparait donc nécessaire de protéger leurs flores. C'est alors qu'interviennent les probiotiques. Véritable arme thérapeutique, les probiotiques sont utilisés en prévention/traitement dans certaines pathologies. Ainsi, ils sont utiles chez la femme enceinte en cas de vaginose ou en prévention du diabète gestationnel par exemple.
