Linked Noun Groups

Linked Noun Groups PDF Author: Michael Pace-Sigge
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030539865
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
This book provides a corpus-led analysis of multi-word units (MWUs) in English, specifically fixed pairs of nouns which are linked by a conjunction, such as 'mum and dad', 'bride and groom' and 'law and order'. Crucially, the occurrence pattern of such pairs is dependent on genre, and this book aims to document the structural distribution of some key Linked Noun Groups (LNGs). The author looks at the usage patterns found in a range of poetry and fiction dating from the 17th to 20th century, and also highlights the important role such binomials play in academic English, while acknowledging that they are far less common in casual spoken English. His findings will be highly relevant to students and scholars working in language teaching, stylistics, and language technology (including AI).

The first section features contributions on extremist language from a political lens, such as in election campaigns and media discourse. The second section looks at religious extremism and language used for the purposes of jihadist radicalisation and recruitment. Helping Doctoral Students Write

Helping Doctoral Students Write PDF Author: Barbara Kamler
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317802136
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
Helping Doctoral Students Write offers a proven approach to effective doctoral writing. By treating research as writing and writing as research, the authors offer pedagogical strategies for doctoral supervisors that will assist the production of well-argued and lively dissertations. It is clear that many doctoral candidates find research writing complicated and difficult, but the advice they receive often glosses over the complexities of writing and/or locates the problem in the writer. Kamler and Thomson provide a highly effective framework for scholarly work that is located in personal, institutional and cultural contexts. The pedagogical approach developed in the book is based on the notion of writing as a social practice. This approach allows supervisors to think of doctoral writers as novices who need to learn new ways with words as they enter the discursive practices of scholarly communities. This involves learning sophisticated writing practices with specific sets of conventions and textual characteristics. The authors offer supervisors practical advice on helping with commonly encountered writing tasks such as the proposal, the journal abstract, the literature review and constructing the dissertation argument. The first edition of this book has helped many academics and thousands of research students produce better written material. Now fully updated the second edition includes: Examples from a broader range of academic disciplines A new chapter on writing from the thesis for peer reviewed journals More advice on reading and note taking, performance and conferences, Further information on developing a personal academic writing style, and Advice on the use of social media (blogs, tweets and wikis) to create trans-disciplinary and trans-national networks and conversations. Their discussion of the complexities of forming a scholarly identity is illustrated throughout by stories and writings of actual doctoral students. In conclusion, they present a persuasive and proven argument that universities must move away from simply auditing supervision to supporting the development of scholarly research communities. Any supervisor keen to help their students develop as academics will find the ideas and practical solutions presented in this book fascinating and insightful reading.

No Grammar Tears 1

No Grammar Tears 1 PDF Author: Marthus-Adden Zimboiant
Publisher: Author House
ISBN: 1491800712
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 461

Book Description
First of all other, I find No Grammar Tears very informative. What amazes me is the kind of dedication and patience Marthus-Adden spent in writing this book. This is because this kind of genre actually needs full attention. Truly, whatever he has written is precise and correct. I really admire his generosity of sharing his knowledge about English owing to the fact that English is his second language. What is good about the book is that the writer wrote it in a manner that readers can easily understand it. In other words, what makes this book different from the other English grammar books in the market is that it is more user-friendly, which means he wrote it in a manner that can easily be understood, especially by those who just learned English and want to learn more. Correctly put, this book is a guide to those who wants to learn English on their own. As a matter of fact, he has a knowledge check in every subject he has discussed in this book. He catered everything, especially in the part on how to construct sentences, which are very precise and which make it very easy to learn the book. He did not change anything at all in terms of the right way to speak and learn English, but instead he made it easier and more convenient for those people whose English is not their first language. In point of fact, he wrote this book not because he wants to show off to the world that he is a good grammarian, but because he wants to help those struggling to learn English. The book therefore deserves recognition because he is actually giving a favour to those who can't afford to have a private tutor to teach them how to speak English correctly. I must, in conclusion, admit that this book will really help those people who want to learn English language; those people who are striving to speak perfect English; and those people that English is their second language. I will therefore commend the author for this book.
