Literary criticism often includes ad hoc comments about onomatopoeia, synaesthesia, or other forms of iconism. In A Grammar of Iconism, Earl Anderson discusses these phenomena systematically. According to Anderson, modern post-Saussurian linguistics has as its central tenet the arbitrariness of linguistic signs. Thus, linguistic elements that bear some relationship to their referent have been seen as marginal to the system of language, or at best similar in their arbitrariness to other linguistic signs. As an example of the latter, while most languages have an onomatopoeic element, different languages imitate sounds differently. Anderson argues against the standard view, provides a detailed critique of the negative arguments against iconism, and offers a positive typology that demonstrates the extensiveness and complexity of iconism in language.

A systematic exposition of Reinhart's Theta System, with extensive annotations and essays that capture subsequent developments. One of Tanya Reinhart's major contributions to linguistic theory is the development of the Theta System (TS), a theory of the interface between the system of concepts and the linguistic computational system. Reinhart introduced her theory in a seminal paper, “The Theta System: Syntactic Realization of Verbal Concepts” (2000) and subsequently published other papers with further theoretical development. Although Reinhart continued to work on the Theta System, she had not completed a planned Linguistic Inquiry volume on the topic before her untimely death in 2007. This book, then, is the first to offer a systematic exposition of Reinhart's Theta System. The core of the book is Reinhart's 2000 paper, accompanied by substantial endnotes with clarifications, summaries, and links to subsequent modifications of the theory, some in Reinhart's unpublished work. The topic of this book is the theoretical foundations of a theory LSLT -- Lexical Semantic Language Theory - and its implementation in a the system for text analysis and understanding called GETARUN, developed at the University of Venice, Laboratory of Computational Linguistics, Department of Language Sciences. LSLT encompasses a psycholinguistic theory of the way the language faculty works, a grammatical theory of the way in which sentences are analysed and generated -- for this we will be using Lexical-Functional Grammar -- a semantic theory of the way in which meaning is encoded and expressed in utterances -- for this we will be using Situation Semantics -, and a parsing theory of the way in which components of the theory interact in a common architecture to produce the needed language representation to be eventually spoken aloud or interpreted by the phonetic/acoustic language interface. LSLT will then be put to use to show how discourse relations are mapped automatically from text using the tools available in the 4 sub-theories, and in particular we will focus on Causal Relations showing how the various sub-theories contribute to address different types of causality.
