L'analyse de l'insertion professionnelle des jeunes apparait comme un champ de recherche à l'intersection de plusieurs disciplines, dont les contours semblent encore relativement mal définis. L'objet de cette thèse est de proposer un cadre d'analyse théorique et méthodologique afin de mieux cerner ce champ d'un point de vue économique. Nous avons privilégié deux niveaux d'entrée pour aborder cette notion : l'un microéconomique, basé sur la perception individuelle de l'insertion et l'autre macroéconomique renvoyant aux mécanismes de concurrence inter-générationnelle dans un marché du travail rationné. La première approche s'appuie principalement sur les théories du capital humain et de la recherche d'emploi. Elle permet de comprendre comment se construisent les parcours d'insertion professionnelle à partir des stratégies individuelles des jeunes. La seconde approche nous a amène à reconsidérer ces stratégies individuelles au sein de mécanismes plus généraux du marché du travail. La dynamique contractuelle de la relation d'emploi, les logiques institutionnelles qui régulent la construction de la qualification et les intérêts économiques propres aux différentes générations conduisent à de nouvelles explications des difficultés d'insertion des jeunes dans le cadre des concurrences inter-générationnelles et du rationnement du marché du travail. La seconde partie de la thèse repose sur l'exploitation d'une enquête longitudinale de jeunes sortis du système éducatif au niveau IV entre 1988 et 1990. L'objectif était de tester les hypothèses proposées dans la première partie pour expliquer les disparités d'insertion professionnelle constatées au sein de cette cohorte, à l'aide de modélisations statistiques et économétriques. La nature de l'investissement initial en capital humain, les stratégies de recherche d'emploi et l'influence de certaines caractéristiques jugées plus ou moins favorables par l'employeur, permettent de mieux comprendre les différentes logiques d'insertion des jeunes. Cependant, l'influence de ces facteurs se réduit progressivement au profit de variables plus "processuelles" liées à la construction de l'histoire professionnelle du jeune et aux pratiques de gestion du personnel des entreprises.

Against this background, a major project was launched, the REFLEX project, which aims to make a contribution to assessing the demands that the modern knowledge society places on higher education graduates, and the degree to which higher education institutions in Europe are up to the task of equipping graduates with the competencies needed to meet these demands.
