Book Description
The purpose of this study was to expand existing biological and physical/chemical data for the St. Marys River during 1982 and 1983 to help assess environmental impacts from proposed navigation season extension (January 31 2 weeks). This study builds upon previous data bases gathered during 1979 - 1981. Previous investigations were limited mainly to localities near Neebish Island, while the present study involves sampling sites ranging over some 64 km (40 mi) of the St. Marys River, including a site above the locks at Sault Ste. Marie. Similar techniques have been employed over the years whenever possible to assure comparability for assessing potential natural annual changes in the system's biota nd limnological characteristics. Thus, extensive pre - project data, involving collections carried out during 1979 through 1983, are available. This report contains data on the following topics: Physical and chemical aspects of water; winter sedimentation rates; benthic macroinvertebrates; aquatic macrophytes and primary productivity; ichthyoplankton; and, juvenile and adult fish. Keywords: St. Marys River system; Study stations; Aquatic plants; Primary production; Winter sedimentation; Benthic macroinvertebrates; Fish. (kt).

Book Description
The general purpose of this study was to expand existing biological and physical/chemical data for the St. Marys River during 1982 and 1983 to help assess environmental impacts from proposed navigation season extension. Previous investigations were limited mainly to localities over some 64 km (40 mi). This report contains data on the following topics: physical and chemical aspects of water; winter sedimentation rates; benthic macroinvertebrates; aquatic macrophytes and primary productivity; ichthyoplankton; and, juvenile and adult fish. Potential effects of winter navigation activities are of special concern in narrow channel areas of connecting waters of the Great Lakes such as exist in the St. Marys River. An understanding of the biological systems within these is important for valid impact assessments to be made.

Wetland and Environmental Applications of GIS

Wetland and Environmental Applications of GIS PDF Author: John G. Lyon
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780873718974
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
This new book presents powerful techniques that can be used to address issues and problems related to wetlands and surface waters. It is the first book of its kind to address inventory and management of wetlands and water quality problems using GIS and remote sensing technologies. Wetland and Environmental Applications of GIS describes a variety of techniques, applications, and case studies for evaluating wetland and surface water characteristics at the landscape scale. The book details wetland and environmentally-oriented surface water resource studies using spatial and spectral based technologies such as GIS, remote sensing, computer modeling, and image display. Introductory material is included in the first section to provide a common background and to refresh or introduce concepts to the professional. The second section details applications of these technologies in studies of wetlands, including the use of GIS and archival satellite data in evaluating and measuring sediment types, water depth, and environmental change in the coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes. The third section addresses various environmental applications of GIS, such as locating non-point pollution sources and managing oil spills. The final section supplies additional information and applications, with particular emphasis on potential contributions of remote sensing.
