Italo-Romance Dialects in the Linguistic Repertoires of Immigrants in Italy

Italo-Romance Dialects in the Linguistic Repertoires of Immigrants in Italy PDF Author: Francesco Goglia
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 303099368X
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
This edited book brings together experts on the sociolinguistics of immigration with a focus on the Italo-Romance dialects. Sociolinguistic research on immigrant communities in Italy has widely studied the acquisition and use of Italian as L2 by first-generation immigrants, the maintenance of immigrant languages and code-switching between Italian and the immigrant languages. However, these studies have mostly ignored or neglected to investigate immigrant speakers’ use of Italo-Romance dialects, their awareness of the sociolinguistic situation of majority and minority languages, and their attitudes towards them. Given the important role of Italo-Romance dialects in everyday communication and as a marker of regional identity, this book aims to fill this gap and understand more about the role that these languages play in the linguistic repertoire of immigrants. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, minority languages, multilingualism, migration, and social anthropology.

Acquiring Lingua Franca of the Modern Time

Acquiring Lingua Franca of the Modern Time PDF Author: Elena Polyudova
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443871362
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 150

Book Description
This volume brings together a selection of current strategies in the studying of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) from the perspectives of modern linguistic theory and praxis. Educators from various different countries examine current methods of English language learning in a global environment in which it has become a contemporary lingua franca. Several chapters in the book are taken from the session “ESL Studies” held at the 111th PAMLA (Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association) conference. This volume discusses issues connected with the study of English as a second language by students from various different countries, such as Australia, the European Union, Italy, the Russian Federation, and the USA, and with several different native languages, such as Arabic, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. The chapters form a rich mosaic of interconnecting themes, highlighting the diversity of present-day processes of teaching ESL throughout the world.

The Linguistics of Temperature

The Linguistics of Temperature PDF Author: Maria Koptjevskaja-Tamm
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027269173
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 948

Book Description
The volume is the first comprehensive typological study of the conceptualisation of temperature in languages as reflected in their systems of central temperature terms (hot, cold, to freeze, etc.). The key issues addressed here include questions such as how languages categorize the temperature domain and what other uses the temperature expressions may have, e.g., when metaphorically referring to emotions (‘warm words’). The volume contains studies of more than 50 genetically, areally and typologically diverse languages and is unique in considering cross-linguistic patterns defined both by lexical and grammatical information. The detailed descriptions of the linguistic and extra-linguistic facts will serve as an important step in teasing apart the role of the different factors in how we speak about temperature – neurophysiology, cognition, environment, social-cultural practices, genetic relations among languages, and linguistic contact. The book is a significant contribution to semantic typology, and will be of interest for linguists, psychologists, anthropologists and philosophers.

A Cinema of Poetry

A Cinema of Poetry PDF Author: Joseph Luzzi
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 142141984X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 228

Book Description
A Cinema of Poetry brings Italian film studies into dialogue with fields outside its usual purview by showing how films can contribute to our understanding of aesthetic questions that stretch back to Homer. Joseph Luzzi considers the relation between film and literature, especially the cinematic adaptation of literary sources and, more generally, the fields of rhetoric, media studies, and modern Italian culture. The book balances theoretical inquiry with close readings of films by the masters of Italian cinema: Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Bernardo Bertolucci, and others. Luzzi's study is the first to show how Italian filmmakers address such crucial aesthetic issues as the nature of the chorus, the relation between symbol and allegory, the literary prehistory of montage, and the place of poetry in cinematic expression—what Pasolini called the "cinema of poetry." While Luzzi establishes how certain qualities of film—its link with technological processes, capacity for mass distribution, synthetic virtues (and vices) as the so-called total art—have reshaped centuries-long debates, A Cinema of Poetry also explores what is specific to the Italian art film and, more broadly, Italian cinematic history. In other words, what makes this version of the art film recognizably "Italian"? "A thought-provoking and well-written investigation of the role of history and realism in Italian cinema and the role played by the centuries-long tradition of poetry (or more precisely, poesis) in this quest."—H-Italy "Ambitious, inventive, learned . . . A Cinema of Poetry . . . brilliantly analyzes the art in the art film by showing how Italian cinema uses a chorus or expresses itself through allegory . . . This impressively intelligent re-description of the tradition surely takes its place alongside other necessary histories of Italian cinema."—Choice Joseph Luzzi is a professor of comparative literature at Bard College. He is the author of Romantic Europe and the Ghost of Italy, which received the MLA’s Scaglione Prize for Italian Studies; My Two Italies, a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice; and In a Dark Wood: What Dante Taught Me about Grief, Healing, and the Mysteries of Love.
