Andrew vividly depicts Pickens as he founds churches, acquires slaves, joins the Patriot cause, and struggles over Indian territorial boundaries on the southern frontier. Williams' division of the same corps formed on Geary's right, in the woods, closely connecting with Johnson's division of the Fourteenth corps, while Ward's division, also of the Twentieth corps, remained on the low ground facing the depression between Newton and Geary.
