From an extensive series of experimental studies out on the economically important, obligate air-breathing fish Ophicephalus striatus, it has been possible to recommend certain measures to enchange the fish productivity in waters deficient in oxygen. One g weight fingerling represents the 'critical life stage' of the fish at which breathing from both water and air is obligatory. It is advantageous to culture these fingerlings in shallow nurseries with temperature range of 27 C-32 C, as it greatly enchances the survival and ensure faster growth. Artificial aeration of the fish ponds may not yield any extra advantage. The 2/3 of the adlibitum ration represents the optimum and such reduction in the ration economises the feed cost. Increasing the depth of culture ponds containing larger fishes may not prove to be disadvantageous. [Author's abstract].
