Life Is Magic

Life Is Magic PDF Author: Jon Dorenbos
Publisher: Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster
ISBN: 1982101253
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
“Jon Dorenbos is a magical person. Life Is Magic shows how we can all choose happiness in the face of overwhelming odds.” —Ellen DeGeneres An extraordinary and empowering story of resilience, forgiveness, and living a life of purpose in the face of unfathomable obstacles. You may know him as an NFL All-Pro or as a world-class magician who made the finals of America’s Got Talent, but Jon Dorenbos says that what he does is not who he is. He is someone who coached himself, at the most tender of ages, to turn tragedy to triumph. One morning in August 1992, when Jon was twelve years old and living a seemingly idyllic childhood in suburban Seattle, he woke up for baseball camp. His dad waved goodbye. Later that day, Jon heard the news: his father had murdered his mother in the family’s three-car garage. In an instant, his life had shattered. He’d essentially been orphaned. Thrust into foster care while his father stood trial for murder, Jon struggled. Left to himself, he discovered an unlikely escape performing magic tricks. If you found a way to alter your reality, after your dad—your hero—killed your mom, wouldn’t you cling to it too? Then came football, which provided a release for all of his pent-up anger. Together, magic and football saved him, leading to fourteen NFL seasons on the gridiron and raucous sleight of hand performances to packed houses across the globe. In 2017, he was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition leaving him with a choice. To either break down or—as he’d by now long taught himself—bounce back. “Life Is Magic shows how we can all choose happiness in the face of overwhelming odds” (Ellen DeGeneres) and provides a roadmap for overcoming even the darkest of times. Jon’s story is poignant and powerful, told by a charismatic and optimistic man who has overcome life-or-death challenges with grace, persistence, a childlike sense of wonder…and jaw-dropping card tricks.

A Good Death

A Good Death PDF Author: Sandra Martin
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 1443435988
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Having a good death is our final human right, argues Sandra Martin in this updated and expanded version of her bestselling and award-winning social history of the right to die movement in Canada and around the world. Winner of the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction, finalist for both the Donner Prize in Public Policy and the Dafoe Prize for History, A Good Death has a new chapter on Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying Law. The law allows mentally competent adults, who are suffering grievously from incurable conditions, to ask for a doctor’s help in ending their lives. Does the law go far enough? No, says Martin. She delivers compelling stories about the patients the law ignores: people with life-crushing diseases who are condemned to suffer because their natural deaths are not reasonably foreseeable. With a clear analytical eye, she exposes the law’s shortcomings and outlines constitutional challenges, including the presumed right of publicly-funded faith-based institutions to deny suffering patients a legal medical service. Martin argues that Canada can set an example for the world if it can strike a balance between compassion for the suffering and protection of the vulnerable, between individual choice and social responsibility. A Good Death asks the tough question none of us can avoid: How do you want to die? The answer will change your life—and your death. “[An] excellent new book. . . .The timeliness is hard to overstate.” —The Globe and Mail “What truly distinguishes this book is the reportage on individuals and families who have fought to arrange for a better death. . . . These first-hand experiences are the beating heart of a timely and powerful examination.” —2017 BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction Jury Citation

Life And Death In The Magic City

Life And Death In The Magic City PDF Author: Jay M. Glass
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780996944632
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 628

Book Description
Glass provides a frank tour de force review of Jefferson County, Alabama during the turbulent first half of the 20th Century as seen through the eyes of the coroners, law enforcement officials and news media of that time. Material for this book was compiled over a period of 40 years.Glass's determination to assemble it into a cohesive final product was driven by my desire to avoid the fate of the non-fictional character depicted by Joseph Mitchell in his story titled "Joe Gould's Secret. This book includes portions of a number of transposed verbatim official record entries. These include the actual, uncorrected content to include misspellings and grammatical errors contained in the original documents. This foreknowledge precludes the repetitive use of the Latin term for "thus it was originally written," abbreviated as "sic," to indicate these errors. Interview records and newspaper accounts have been edited to reduce their length by not including statements or material which were considered to be redundant or which did not directly relate to the matter presented. The term "Magic City" in the title of this book is employed as a metaphor for the entirety of Jefferson County and not just for the city of Birmingham. A number of incidents which are presented occurred in Bessemer---"The Marvel City," as well as in the adjacent, then bustling West Jefferson County area commonly known as the "Cut-Off." The period which is covered extends from the late 1890s to a point just prior to the start of the World War II. The use of selected Blues music verses, which I believe serve as relevant introductions to subject matter contained in certain chapters, is predicated on the statement that: "The Blues are about the most elemental stuff in our lives---love, sex, betrayal---and our deepest longings."3 Similar, and even more extensive historical information, can be found within the coroner's records of most cities in this country and every jurisdiction has its own tales to tell. However, this is a partial story of this particular town, the "Magic City," in the early 20th century as portrayed through documented incidents and certain statistics. Although much of the material in these pages is about death, the actual subject is life.
