L'organisation communautaire est l'une des principales méthodes d'intervention associées à la profession du travail social. De nombreux éléments distinguent la pratique en organisation communautaire de l'intervention individuelle, familiale et de groupe et affectent les conditions dans lesquelles l'identité professionnelle des organisateurs communautaires (OC) se développe. Le mémoire vise à répondre à la question suivante : « Quels sont les facteurs et les processus qui interviennent, selon les organisatrices et les organisateurs communautaires formés en service social, dans le développement de leur identité professionnelle? ». Plus particulièrement, trois thèmes inspirés de la théorie de la construction de l'identité professionnelle de Dubar (2010) ont été creusés davantage : l'influence de la trajectoire personnelle et sociale sur le développement de l'identité professionnelle des OC, l'influence du contexte sur le développement identitaire, puis les rapports que les OC entretiennent avec l'Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux (OTSTCFQ) et le Regroupement québécois des intervenants et intervenantes en action communautaire en CSSS (RQIIAC). Pour répondre à la question de recherche, dix OC ont été rencontrées en entrevues individuelles. Parmi ces OC, cinq travaillent en CSSS et cinq dans des organismes communautaires. Cette répartition permet de comparer le développement de l'identité professionnelle de ces OC évoluant dans des milieux de travail différents. Au terme d'une analyse qualitative du contenu manifeste des entrevues, plusieurs constats sont dressés. On peut regrouper ces constats selon quatre thèmes : le profil des participantes, l'influence de la trajectoire personnelle et sociale sur l'identité, l'influence du contexte sur l'identité, puis les rapports avec les groupes professionnels. Alors que toutes les participantes des CSSS s'identifient comme OC, les participantes du milieu communautaire adoptent des identités plus variées. La trajectoire personnelle et sociale s'avère significative dans le développement identitaire puisque la formation universitaire et d'autres expériences (p. ex. implication sociale) orientent l'identité professionnelle des participantes. Du côté du contexte, il ressort surtout que l'organisation communautaire est une pratique peu comprise dans plusieurs contextes, ce qui amène de nombreuses négociations identitaires entre les OC rencontrées et leurs collègues, leurs supérieurs et d'autres personnes. Enfin, les OC rapportent s'identifier peu ou pas du tout à l'OTSTCFQ, tandis que le RQIIAC sert de communauté de pratiques qui structure l'identité professionnelle individuelle et collective des OC en CSSS. Les limites de la recherche et ses retombées potentielles offrent des éléments de réflexion pour les milieux de la recherche et de la pratique en organisation communautaire.
