Lichens of Southern California (Classic Reprint)

Lichens of Southern California (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Hermann Edward Hasse

ISBN: 9781332303489
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 22

Book Description
Excerpt from Lichens of Southern California The large class of Lichens has comparatively been given but scant attention by botanists, although their study is not less devoid of interest than that of other Cryptograms or of Phanerograms possessed of greater exterior attractiveness in contrast to the modest Lichen in unassuming garb, persistently toiling in obscurity with tenacious vitality and achieving important results in vegetable economy by preparing sterile soil or hardest rock for the ultimate support of more pretentious plants. With the object of attaining greater recognition for these humble plants by students of California Botany, this preliminary list is presented. Without the patient and disinterested assistance and advice of Dr. W. Nylander, who named the undescribed and classified difficult species, the compilation of this list could not have been accomplished. As it is it gives but a tithe of the interesting Lichens of this part of the State, but it is hoped that an enlargement of this report will be made if possible. The kindness of correspondents in forwarding specimens is also gratefully acknowledged and for these due credit has been attempted to be given. Lichens From the Old Rock Poems (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Jessie Margaret Edmondston Saxby

Category : Poetry

Book Description
Excerpt from Lichens From the Old Rock Poems IT is certain that many of my fellow-countrymen, who are now toiling in distant lands, occasionally derive no small amount of pleasure from the mere contemplation of a tiny flower, a withered sprig of heath, or even a rude unshapely fragment of lichen, which, in days gone by, has been gathered by a friendly hand from their native rocks. To those individuals themselves, and also to those of my readers who can appreciate the mind which does not estimate such humble me mentoes according to their intrinsic worth, I chiefly look for indulgence, trusting that my object in offer ing this little collection of poems, may be deemed at least a small compensation for the numerous errors and shortcomings, which so inevitably accompany. A Synopsis of the North American Lichens (Classic Reprint)

A Synopsis of the North American Lichens (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Edward Tuckerman
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331876090
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Excerpt from A Synopsis of the North American Lichens The arrangement of this book is that of the author's Genera Lichenum, 1872; and the few variations from this will, it is hoped, explain themselves. The plants described are, in great part, sufficiently well settled; and the new things appear to demand an at least provisional place: though the author would have preferred to keep the most of these last back, with Horace, nonum in annum. And this not merely from hesitation as to the novelty or the rank of the lichens referred to, but because he entertains strongly the opinion that the science of Lichens - whether as regards morphology or system - has by no means kept pace, since Fries's day, with the diagnostic enumeration of new forms called arbitrarily species; and he is sorry to have possibly added to the number of these constructions. Agreeably to the wishes of the friends who have urged an early publication, this part of the work, comprising the more conspicuous lichens, is printed first. Book Description
Excerpt from Lichen Tufts: From the Alleghanies So running the gauntlet of all manner of croaking prophecies about colds and rheumatisms, and spiders crawling into our ears, and caterpillars creeping in at our mouths, and of all manner of shocked proprieties wagging dissenting heads at us, and a prospective storm of I told you so's! To hail our disappointed and untimely return, we packed up our bed and board in the narrowest possible compass, and went off, like over grown children, to play in the woods.
