Book Description
Correspondence from George Gibbs to John Torrey, dated 1854. This collection consists of two letters, dated January 8 and December 12. The first letter seems to have accompanied some specimens of an unidentified "odoriferous shrub" found in the area of Washington from which Gibbs is writing, which he describes in detail and which Torrey appears to have identified-- with a small note on the letter-- as Ceanothus velutinus. Gibbs' second letter notes that he has only just received, in December, a letter from Torrey dated March 23. Gibbs goes on to describe his recent activities with the Pacific Railroad Survey.
