Book Description
THE WORK which is presented here first deals with climatic studies of evapotranspiration along the South Tropic, from Polynesia to the East coast of Australia. It focuses mainly on New-Caledonia. This study is followed by a methodological study of evapotranspiration in semi-arid areas of South Australia. CLIMATES of the whole region of our interest are governed both by the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone to the North and the Anticyclonic Belt to the South. Their periodic latitudinal movements determine the local climates. CIMATIC STUDIES of evapotranspiration have shown interactions between evapotranspiration, other climatic parameters and types of weather described by some typical meteorogical situations, they have shown also evidence of strong advection. METHODOLOGICAL STUDIES were carried out for various types of vegetation, dry grasslands, Eucalyptus - bush - bare soils associations, rice fields. They have made an attempt to compare classical micrometeorological methods with the use of natural stable isotopes of water to trace water movements in the soil - plant - atmosphere continuum. A REGIONAL SYNTHESIS bas been proposed based on hydrological budgets.

The Ocean Challenge Badge

The Ocean Challenge Badge PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 925107948X
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
The ocean covers 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, and is essential for life on our planet – even for those of us who live nowhere near the sea! It provides us all with food and other materials that we need, regulates our climate and provides half of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean also offers us various means of transport and opportunities for recreation. People have long thought that the ocean was so wide and bountiful that it would go on supplying our needs forever, but this is not the case: human activities are causing significant damage to life in the ocean. People are often unaware of the problems created by this heavy reliance, as few of us have the opportunity to look beneath the surface of the sea and see the damage that our actions have caused. This is where the Ocean Challenge Badge comes in: let it take you on a journey to discover the ocean! It is packed with activities to help you learn about how the ocean works, the creatures that live in it, and just how important it is in our everyday lives. You will also discover how YOU can play a role in protecting our ocean for future generations. We hope you will be inspired to take the challenge and celebrate our ocean. So dive in and begin your aquatic discoveries!

Soil and Culture

Soil and Culture PDF Author: Edward R. Landa
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048129605
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 485

Book Description
SOIL: beneath our feet / food and fiber / ashes to ashes, dust to dust / dirt!Soil has been called the final frontier of environmental research. The critical role of soil in biogeochemical processes is tied to its properties and place—porous, structured, and spatially variable, it serves as a conduit, buffer, and transformer of water, solutes and gases. Yet what is complex, life-giving, and sacred to some, is ordinary, even ugly, to others. This is the enigma that is soil. Soil and Culture explores the perception of soil in ancient, traditional, and modern societies. It looks at the visual arts (painting, textiles, sculpture, architecture, film, comics and stamps), prose & poetry, religion, philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, wine production, health & diet, and disease & warfare. Soil and Culture explores high culture and popular culture—from the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch to the films of Steve McQueen. It looks at ancient societies and contemporary artists. Contributors from a variety of disciplines delve into the mind of Carl Jung and the bellies of soil eaters, and explore Chinese paintings, African mud cloths, Mayan rituals, Japanese films, French comic strips, and Russian poetry.
