Book Description
Literary production is increasingly shaped by globalization and the complex nature of cultural, political, and social interaction. Our Europe

Our Europe PDF Author: Laurent Gaudé
Publisher: Europa Editions
ISBN: 1609455800
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 135

Book Description
This “urgent, epic” poem exploring the history of Europe “encourages both lucidity and humility, to try and save what beauty is left in the world” (Les Echos, FR). “For some time now, Europe seems to have forgotten it is the daughter of epics and utopia. It has been drained by its inability to remind its citizens of this. Too distant, disembodied, the concept often arouses nothing more than disillusioned boredom. And yet, the history of Europe is one of constant upheaval. So much fire and death; inventions and art, too. Literature, perhaps, can remind us of this: that the European history is one of muscle, vigour, passion, anger and joy.”—Laurent Gaude, from the introduction In Our Europe, Prix Goncourt-winning author Laurent Gaude makes an impassioned plea for Europeans to remember their history and heritage. From the industrial revolution through two world wars and to the birth of the European Union, Our Europe sets in free verse the story of 150 years of growth, confrontation, hope, defeat and passion. It is both “an Iliad for our times” and a heartfelt appeal for a Europe that celebrates difference, solidarity, and freedom (L’Echo de Bruxelles, FR).

Democracy Promotion and the Normative Power Europe Framework

Democracy Promotion and the Normative Power Europe Framework PDF Author: Marek Neuman
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 331992690X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
This book presents a topical, holistic assessment of the European Union’s democracy promotion in South-East Europe, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia, analyzed through the prism of the Normative Power Europe (NPE) framework of transnational policy formation. To do so, it brings together three scholarly domains that traditionally stand apart and are discussed separately. The first addresses the notion of the European Union conducting a normatively-driven foreign policy both near and far abroad. The second is concerned with the legitimacy, operationality, and effectiveness of promoting democracy in third-world countries. The third addresses the quality of the relationship the European Union has been able to establish with some vital – yet often troubled – countries in South-East Europe, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Finally, based on the empirical findings presented in each chapter, this volume concludes by rethinking the concept and relevance of NPE to the field’s understanding of the EU’s foreign policy making. This edited volume offers the reader both a theoretically and empirically rich analysis of the European Union’s efforts to promote democracy abroad. As such is scholars and students of EU studies, particularly EU foreign policy, as well as policy makers at EU and national level and civil society representatives responsible for designing/implementing democracy promoting projects on the ground.

Book Description
This collection of speeches by the Nobel Prize-winning Prime Minister presents the addresses he delivered abroad between 1949 and 1950. After guiding his country through the darkest times of World War II, Winston Churchill was defeated in the General Election of 1945. But he once again become Prime Minister in 1951. This collection features Churchill’s speeches, addresses, and other public communications in his period between terms. Churchill’s speaking engagements during this time took him across Europe—including to Brussels, Strasbourg, Copenhagen, and elsewhere—and across the Atlantic to the United States where he spoke in Boston and New York.
