Book Description
Excerpt from A Letter to the Hon.: Harrison Gray Otis The fubjeets of this letter are the Embargo, and the differences in controverfy between our Country and great-britain - Subjects upon which it is /my misfor tune, in the difchar'ge of my duties as a Senator of the United States to differ from the Opinions of my Col league. The place where the quellion upon the firlt of them, 111 common with others of great national con cern, was between him and me, in our official capaci ties a proper object of difcuflion, was the Senate of the Union - There, it was difcufi'ed, and, as far as the con fiitutional authority of that body extended, there it was decided - Having obtained alike the concurrence of the Other branch of the National Legiflature, and the ap probation of the Prefident, it became the Law of the Land, and as fuch I have confidered it entitled to the refp'ee't and obedience of every virtuous citizen. Book Description
Excerpt from A Letter to the Hon.: Harrison Gray Otis, Peleg Sprague, and Richard Fletcher, Esq. The following Letter appeared in the Boston Courier, a short time after the meeting in Faneuil Hall, to which it referred - long enough ago to be forgotten by all but a few friends of the writer, who thought some of the reminiscences contained in it might be usefully republished at this time in a less ephemeral form. The name of the writer is not now attached to it for the reason originally given in the Letter itself. It could add nothing to the weight of any statements or opinions contained in the article, which, being such as he would never be ashamed to avow, he has no hesitation in thus publishing anonymously. A few notes are added, which seemed to be needed in the advancing state of the subject in the public interest.
