Book Description
Excerpt from Letters From France and Italy The establishment and continuance of peace between Great Britain and the Continental nations, has opened an intercourse so free between their respective people, that the customs and curiosities of France and Italy are almost as familiar to our minds, as the customs and curiosities of our native land. Thither the Artist hastens for the cultivation of his taste, or the examination of those models, which the superior skill of by-gone ages has bequeathed to their posterity. Thither the Antiquarian bends his steps, that he may sit with admiring contemplation, beside the vestiges of antiquity. Thither the Naturalist wanders to explore that loveliness which Nature unfolds beneath a softer sky, and more genial climate. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters From France, in 1802, Vol. 1 This style I have adopted in' these vo lumes, from necessity; the greater part of them havingbeen written in Paris, for the information ofa respected and learned friend, whose enfeebled state of health, inclined him to resort to the milder cli mate of France, in case my representa tions of its political condition 'were such, as to exhibit a reasonable expectation, that s'ecurity of property, and tranquillity of mind, might be enjoyed in that country. But, I would not be understood, that all the Letters written with this view, reached the pe1son for whom they were intended. Classic French Letters

Classic French Letters PDF Author: Edward Lorraine Walter

Category : Foreign Language Study

Book Description
Excerpt from Classic French Letters: Selected and Edited With Notes The literary interest is much more complex. In my Opinion, the first and indispensable requirement for this is that the letters reveal to us the writer, not his Opinions or his history, but the man himself, in his weakness and his strength, his unreasoned tastes and his unfounded prejudices; they must be letters and not essays. Whatever does not meet this need may have great interest and value, but must rank in an other class. I know of course the danger and the difficulty of classification; if any one chooses to pro nounce Burke's Letter on the French Revolution or the correspondence between Goethe and Schiller the very ideal of letter-writing, there is nothing to be said. But the ordinary man would shrink with horror and alarm at the receipt of such letters, and the judgment of the ordinary man on such a point must be accepted as conclusive. Book Description
Excerpt from A Summer in France: Letters They seem to have been all over the world without learning anything from their travels. Wonderful people! The woman next me I have not yet had the courage to say good morning to; she is - well - you and I would call it stout, but she has a mind of a different order, and thinks herself sweetly plump, and assures the rag-doll lady that the reason she eats so little is because she is afraid she will become stout. I must not forget the young boy who looks just like Nana, the dog, in Peter Pan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
