A FERVENT heat flooded my room when I drew up the persianas on Sunday, one of the first breaths of the intense Valencian summer. It was a day to make the heart of the tarantula rejoice; a day to spend among green and growing things, in travel--anywhere but near the scorching pavements of a city. After a stroll from the Alameda through the Glorieta, where big yellow ranunculi seemed greedily to drink the fierce sunlight, we returned to luncheon, vainly longing for a swimming bath. There may be such baths in Valencia, but we were told that they had not yet been opened for the summer. In one respect Spaniards seem to be like camels. The camel hates a plunge more than he can say, as he happens to be almost the only animal that cannot swim. Immediately he enters the water he turns on his back, and is drowned. At three o'clock we had bidden farewell to the incomparable cuisine of our hotel and were well away to Alcoy.
