The Collected Letters of William Morris, Volume IV

The Collected Letters of William Morris, Volume IV PDF Author: William Morris
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400864240
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 525

Book Description
These volumes bring to a close the only comprehensive edition of the surviving correspondence of William Morris (1834-1896), a protean figure who exerted a major influence as poet, craftsman, master printer, and designer. Volumes III and IV, taken together, give in detail the comments and observations that articulate his problematic political and artistic stands and equally problematic position within the aesthetic movement as it developed in the 1890s. Most eloquently voiced also are the complexities of his troubled marriage and his devotion to his epileptic daughter, Jenny, and his other daughter, May. But dominating all these themes, organizing and structuring them, are the Kelmscott Press and the building of Morris's important library of medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The letters record the way in which the Press becomes not only the center of Morris's aesthetic ambitions and achievements but also the site for his closest human relations and for much of his connecting with the makers of early modernism. The letters in Volumes III and IV are thoroughly annotated, and through texts and notes provide a new assessment of Morris's career. Included also, as appendices to Volume IV, are two important documents: the first, never before published, is F. S. Ellis's Valuation List of Morris's library, made after Morris's death, and the second, never before reprinted, is the text of what was to be Morris's final essay on socialism, published in April 1896. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Lord Byron, Vol. 4 of 6: With His Letters and Journals You tell me to take care of myself - faith, and I will. I won't be posthumous yet, if I can help it. Notwithstanding, only think what a Life and Adventures, ' while I am in full scandal, would be worth, together with the membra' of my writing desk, the sixteen beginnings of poems never to be finished I Do you think I would not have shot myself last year, had I not luckily recollected that Mrs. C at and Lady N and all the old women in England would have been delighted besides the agreeable Lunacy, ' of the Crowner's Quest, ' and the regrets of two or three or half a dozen? Be assured that I would live for two reasons, or more there are one or two people whom I have to put out of the world and as many into it, before I can depart in peace if I do so before, I have not fulfilled my mission. Besides, when I turn thirty, I will turn devout; I feel a great vocation that way in Catholic churches, and when I hear the organ. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Gray, Vol. 4: Letters, Journal of Tour in Italy I DO not admit that the excellencies of the French writers are measured by the verisimilitude, or the regularities of their Dramas only. Nothing in them, or in our own, even Shakespeare himself, ever touches us, unless rendered verisimile, which by good management may be accomplished even in such absurd stories as the Tempest, the Witches in Macbeth, or the Fairies in the Midsummer Night's Dream and I know not of any writer that has pleased chiefly in proportion to his regularity. Other beauties may indeed be heightened and set off by its means, but of itself it hardly pleases at all. Venice Preserved, or Jane Shore, are not so regular as the Orphan, or Tamerlane, or Lady Jane Grey. III. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Life of Lord Byron, Vol. 4 With His Letters and Journals by Thomas Moore "Your letters of the 18th and 20th are arrived. In my own I have given you the rise, progress, decline, and fall, of my recent malady. It is gone to the devil: I won't pay him so bad a compliment as to say it came from him;-he is too much of a gentleman. It was nothing but a slow fever, which quickened its pace towards the end of its journey. I had been bored with it some weeks-with nocturnal burnings and morning perspirations; but I am quite well again, which I attribute to having had neither medicine nor doctor thereof. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters, Journals and Memories of E. Huntington Blatchford, 1920 Frances May Blatchford began this life eleven years earlier than the brother of whom she writes, and ended it thirteen years later. His living presence had been her most vivid and pervasive joy; his memory through those last years was the background of her daily living; the inspiration of her purposes, the refuge from her disappointments. Her love for him developed fast from the elder sister's fondness for the baby of the family into a totally different sentiment. He soon grew old enough to touch her imagination, to awaken her confidence, to rouse her admiration. While still a boy in years he became her practical adviser and her knight of romance. If he had lived to marry, one wonders what woman could have satisfied her requirements as a fit mate for her Galahad, but probably the fact that she was his choice would have covered her with a glamor through which no faults could have emerged save faults of omission or commission toward him. There is no doubt that while gifted with a keen power of character analysis, it was a gift rather than an acquirement; always instinctive, rather than logical, always influenced, sometimes clouded by feeling.
