Book Description
Excerpt from Letter to the Hon. John Quincy Adams, on the Oregon Question To the Hon. John Quincy Adams, Member of Congress: Dear Sir: I have just read your remarkable and lucid speech, delivered in the House of Representatives, on the ninth day of February, and having noticed the foundation on which you so confidently rely as establishing our title to the whole of the Oregon Territory, I cannot but admire the firmness of mind, and that reliance upon Divine authority, which you manifest. If there can be no possible mistake in your interpretation of the will of God in reference to our right, ownership, and occupancy of the whole of Oregon, yet things which are clear to some minds may be dark and doubtful to others. And it cannot be deemed strange that in reference to the Territory in question there should exist an honest difference in the sentiments and views of mankind, both on this and on the other side of the Atlantic. To approach such a man as I esteem you to be in the purity of your purpose, with such universal knowledge of all that appertains to human rights, the governments of the different nations, and your perfect acquaintance with the whole science of jurisprudence, and whatever has existed, or does exist in the purposes or pursuits and policy of them all: To approach you, I say, with the most distant thought of the least possible criticism, would be a folly on my part which could not be disguised or hidden from the most superficial. I do indeed consider you as one of the most pure, intelligent, and honest leading politicians on earth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Remarks and Criticism: On the Hon. John Quincy Adams's Letter to the Hon. Harrison Gray Otis As a great number of gentlemen have expressed a wish to see the remarks and criticisms on the Hon. Mr. Adams's letter republished in the pamphlet form, the following compilation is offered to the publick, taken principally from the New-York Evening Post. It is left to literary men to decide whether the Honourable Senator has not been overrated as a scholar; and to politicians, whether he has not disappointed them as a statesman. If he has been flattered, admired and trusted beyond his merit, it has been his misfortune; and if all is now left that justly belongs to him, he cannot complain. Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Description
Excerpt from Ex-President John Quincy Adams in Pittsburgh in 1843: Address of Welcome, by Wilson McCandless, and Mr. Adams' Reply; Together With a Letter From Mr. Adams Relative to Judge Brackenridge's "Modern Chivalry" We have not strewed owers in your path, nor erected triumphal arches at your approach, but greet you with the homage of grateful hearts, as evinced in this spontaneous outpouring of the people. Here, Sir, is the token of that universal regard in which you are held by the free citizens of this great country. And here, Sir, you have the reward for a long life of meritorious public service. What can be more endearing to the heart of the patriot, than this exhibition of public sentiment; than this manifestation of love for your person, and admiration for your exalted talents and virtues. Like the son of Marcus Cato, you have been a foe to tyrants, and your country's friend, and that country now tenders to you the tribute of her affection and gratitude. You seem, Sir, like the aged oak, standing alone on the plain, which time has spared a little longer, after all its cotemporaries have been levelled with the dust, but the people delight to gather round the venerable trunk, and dwell beneath the shadow of its yet green foliage. Associated as you have been with the father OF his country, partaking largely of his confidence, and deeply imbued with the lofty patriotism of his char acter, it must be gratifying to you, to visit this, the theatre of his earliest achievements.
