Go and Kick

Go and Kick PDF Author: Angel Powers
Publisher:
ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 42

Book Description
Your alarm goes off, and you hit the ground running. You have run through the day's scenarios in your mind by the time you make it to the shower. Feeling exhausted, as if you have just crossed the finish line at the marathon, you left the house later than expected and forgot your laptop. Traffic was slow, and you hit every red light. Your heart is racing, your feeling weak with trembling knees, and your stomach is in knots. You think to yourself; this is it. Here's the ticket they need to fire me as you hit another red light. You suspect that your boss thinks you are already incompetent and terrible at your job, and they have been waiting for an excuse to let you go. You pull into the parking lot (late again). Thank god there's parking. You put your car in park and turn the key. While you remove the key from the ignition, you look in the rearview mirror to notice you're still at home, still in the shower. Does this sound like you? Do you run through your day anxious or worried about what's going to happen? Are you emotionally drained by preparing for the worst parts of your day before you even leave the house? Do you generally feel anxious but not anxious enough to need help or therapy? While I think everyone would benefit from treatment, therapy isn't for everyone (yet). My name is Angel Powers; I had anxiety as a young child, which presented itself as stomachaches and nervousness. I feared storms and the dark. I would create these wild stories in my head about bad things happening. As I got older, I feared judgment from others, so I did whatever I could to fit in. After having my son at 21, the anxiety was out of control. I managed to work for a few years, but my demanding schedule and managing work/life balance was too much to handle. After my son turned three years old, I found myself back on the couch in a therapy office. I met Joanne, and my life changed. Joanne was the Social Worker that helped change my life. You see, growing up, I didn't realize I had anxiety. I didn't know I had any mental health struggles.Meanwhile, I had my name changed three times. I lived in women's shelters for years and moved across the country five times over. It didn't seem to matter what circumstance I was in, and anxiety seems to be the response: dogs, people, work, relationships, and any stress. I spent years avoiding situations that made me anxious, and as a result, almost everything started to make me feel uneasy. I gained control of my life and used the tools I've put in this book. The anxiety journey is lifelong, but it doesn't have to debilitate you. After all, anxiety is a normal emotion. After reading this book, I hope you will gain a little more knowledge about how anxiety affects your life precisely and that you would have acquired tools and skills to help you cope and eventually heal. I can't promise that it'll go away forever but what I can say is that if you make it a daily practice to work through it, anxiety does not need to be part of your identity.

He's Not Lazy

He's Not Lazy PDF Author: Adam Price
Publisher: Union Square & Co.
ISBN: 1454926457
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
“Clinical psychologist Price offers one of the most significant books of the year in this new look at an old problem—the underperforming teenage boy… Price’s book brings an important voice to a much needed conversation.” —Library Journal (Starred review) On the surface, capable teenage boys may look lazy. But dig a little deeper, writes child psychologist Adam Price in He’s Not Lazy, and you’ll often find conflicted boys who want to do well in middle and high school but are afraid to fail, and so do not try. This book can help you become an ally with your son, as he discovers greater self-confidence and accepts responsibility for his future. Why are some teenage boys unmotivated? Why do they spend endless hours playing video games or glued to their phones and social media sites instead of studying? Is this a sign of laziness or something more troubling? As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Adam Price has found that teenage boys are extremely sensitive to the stress of our competitive achievement-oriented culture—one that has created a pressure cooker for today’s adolescent. In He’s Not Lazy, Dr. Price, a renowned expert on ADHD and learning disabilities, explains how to help a boy who is not lazy, but rather, is conflicted about trying his best. Dr. Price will guide you to discover hidden obstacles to your son’s success, set expectations, and empower him to accept responsibility for his own future. He’s Not Lazy will help you become your son’s ally, as he discovers greater self-confidence and becomes more self-reliant. Rather than reacting to pressure by shunning academic responsibilities altogether or propping up fear-based rebellion with justifications like “I am not going to be one of those nerds who have no life,” or “Tests don’t measure intelligence or help you learn, so what’s the point of studying for them?” your teenage son can work with you using the guidance in this book.
