The present volume is a continuation of the series Contemporary Philosophy. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the present Chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophy. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the increasing contact between p- losophers from various cultures, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and in the philosophy of language and ethics, and the increasing attention being paid to the h- tory of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, are the most important contributing factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity. The surveys may therefore help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the intercultural dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. L’amour n’est donc pas défini comme une passion, c’est-à-dire comme un affect qui s’impose à la volonté humaine en provenance d’une source extérieure à celle-ci. L’amour n’est pas seulement une force qui s’impose à la volonté en la bouleversant sans que l’individu humain n’y puisse rien, comme l’opinion populaire a souvent tendance à considérer l’amour. Selon Marion, qui s’appuie sur une conception de la volonté aux relents stoïciens, l’individu humain doit d’abord consentir à ce qui se donne à lui pour en être affecté. Ainsi, il n’y a pas d’amour sans une volonté de se laisser affecter par autrui, sans un désir de l’autre qui nait au plus intime de l’individu humain. Du fait que l’amour nécessite l’accord de la volonté humaine, nous avons conclu que l’amour selon Marion va de pair avec la liberté humaine et n’est pas seulement une passion contraire à celle-ci. Cette place qu’accorde l’auteur à la volonté humaine en amour a néanmoins suscité de nombreuses interrogations et critiques, notamment, à notre avis, en raison de la conception très nuancée de la volonté humaine sur laquelle s’appuie Marion dans le Phénomène érotique.
