Dreams for Lesotho

Dreams for Lesotho PDF Author: John Aerni-Flessner
Publisher: University of Notre Dame Pess
ISBN: 026810364X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
In Dreams for Lesotho: Independence, Foreign Assistance, and Development, John Aerni-Flessner studies the post-independence emergence of Lesotho as an example of the uneven ways in which people experienced development at the end of colonialism in Africa. The book posits that development became the language through which Basotho (the people of Lesotho) conceived of the dream of independence, both before and after the 1966 transfer of power. While many studies of development have focused on the perspectives of funding governments and agencies, Aerni-Flessner approaches development as an African-driven process in Lesotho. The book examines why both political leaders and ordinary people put their faith in development, even when projects regularly failed to alleviate poverty. He argues that the potential promise of development helped make independence real for Africans. The book utilizes government archives in four countries, but also relies heavily on newspapers, oral histories, and the archives of multilateral organizations like the World Bank. It will interest scholars of decolonization, development, empire, and African and South African history.

Everything Lost Is Found Again

Everything Lost Is Found Again PDF Author: Will McGrath
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781945814624
Category : BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Funny and heartfelt, this amalgamation of memoir and essay collection tells the story of twenty months the author spent in Lesotho, the small, landlocked kingdom surrounded by South Africa. There he finds a spirit of joyful absurdity and resolve, surrounded by people who take strangers' hands as they walk down the road, people who--with sweetest face--drop the dirtiest jokes in the southern hemisphere. But Lesotho is also a place where shepherds exact Old Testament retribution, where wounded pride incites murder and families are devastated by the AIDS epidemic. Driven by a spirit of openhearted cultural exchange in the style of Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country and Alexandra Fuller's Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, Will McGrath's Everything Lost Is Found Again is a love-drunk ballad to Lesotho, infusing humor and heart into pop ethnography.

Historical Dictionary of Lesotho

Historical Dictionary of Lesotho PDF Author: Scott Rosenberg
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 0810879824
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 656

Book Description
Lesotho is rather different from most other African countries. For starters, it is a kingdom, which preserves a traditional hierarchy and customs, and its population consists of one fairly homogenous ethnic group, although admittedly there are differences and occasional rifts within it. Then, it is a landlocked country, completely surrounded by South Africa on which is depends heavily. Economically, it has not been doing particularly well, this partly because the country is so poorly endowed by nature, and its people often eke out a living abroad. Politically, there have been ups and downs, the downs fortunately lying in the past, with Lesotho doing somewhat better since the latest elections. Socially and culturally, as hinted, it is quite unique and this can be gathered from reading the book. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Lesotho covers the full scope of Lesotho’s ancient, colonial, and independence eras. It gives greater emphasis to the more recent period and brings the book fully up-to-date. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries on civil society, key events, leaders, governmental, international, religious, and other private organizations, policies, political movements and parties, economic elements, and many other areas that have shaped the country’s trajectory. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Lesotho.

Running for Their Lives

Running for Their Lives PDF Author: Sherrie A. Inness
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780847698516
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
Girl Power has become the rallying cry for a new generation of girls as they navigate--on their own terms--the perilous yet exhilarating journey from girlhood to adulthood. Though this transformation is often difficult for middle-class white girls growing up in the United States, it is unimaginably more difficult for girls, often in developing countries, who contend with such life-threatening issues as poverty, abuse, and civil war. Indeed, girl power is a luxury these girls can't afford. Consider the young Thai teenage girl who must work in a button factory in order to save some money for her daughter. Think about the poverty-stricken young girl who is raped in rural Pakistan, and whose rapist is never brought to trial.Consider the journey of the African girl who is adopted and brought to the United States, yet discovers that she is not accepted because of her race. These stories and other equally painful sagas will resonate with readers of this collection, whose chapters will give these and other disenfranchised girls a place to speak, a place to express some of the pain, emotional and physical, of their journey through girlhood.
