Following this, he turned to mechanical flight and concentrated all of his time and money on it until the end of his life. He achieved two self-propelled flights in 1890 and 1897, the latter backed by the French War Office. While there are conflicting reports about the success of these flights, both preceded those of the Wright brothers.
