Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa

Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa PDF Author: Salif Diop
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030612252
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 521

Book Description
The focus of this book is on the key water-related vulnerabilities to climate change in Africa, particularly in its most vulnerable areas, exploring potential management responses to such vulnerabilities. The African countries are particularly exposed and vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change, with important impacts on water resources and hydrological systems, water availability, water resource management and sea level variations. Already, under various anthropogenic pressures, the status of water resources in Africa has been changing over the past decades, with decreasing water quality, falling groundwater levels, and variability in rainfall, both in terms of timing and intensity. Climate change will further accelerate the rate of change, affecting the ability of people and societies to respond in a timely manner. It is clear that there is no quick fix to the pressures imposed on water resources by climate change. Increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to extreme events such as flooding and drought, and integrating climate change risks and opportunities into development decision-making is indeed a key challenge, as much a technical climate-change one, as a political and developmental challenge. The book, in this regard, intends to contribute to the debate around climate change in relation to water resources management in Africa, and in particular inform policy decisions and actions that will improve governments’ and communities’ ability to manage the challenges of climate change and variability in relation to the aquatic ecosystems that they depend on. The knowledge collected in this book will benefit policy makers, researchers, as well as other stakeholders.

Networks, Governance and Economic Development

Networks, Governance and Economic Development PDF Author: Mari Joes Aranguren Querejeta
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 1848442688
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
This innovative volume explores the role of networks and variation in their forms of governance in delivering successful local and regional economic development. Written by experts from different disciplines, it offers a judicious mix of general theoretical reflections and specific case studies of different places, sectors, and scales. The result is an important contribution to an emerging research agenda on networked governance and the governance of networks and their influence on competitiveness in and across different scales of economic activities. Bob Jessop, Lancaster University, UK Networks, Governance and Economic Development represents one of the most authoritative compilations on the role of networks. The editors have brought together an impressive group of scholars who, from different disciplinary approaches, provide a fantastic overview of the key aspects in the governance of networks and on how they affect local economic development. Andrés Rodríguez-Pose, London School of Economics, UK This compact and authoritative book brings together the topical themes of networks and governance to advance understanding of the determinants of local economic development in the context of increasingly global relationships. Analyzing the governance of networks is critical in understanding how individual localities are able to promote development and consolidate positions within global production systems. In addressing such issues, this book accomplishes a significant bridging of disciplinary boundaries, incorporating different theoretical and empirical perspectives on the meanings and roles of territory, economic development and different forms of networks and governance. Networks, Governance and Economic Development brings together the analysis of leading researchers in their fields, following their interactions at a European Science Foundation exploratory workshop. The chapters will be an invaluable resource to researchers working in the fields of regional economic development, economic geography and economic policy as well as postgraduate students taking modules that specialize in aspects of the above themes.

Water ecosystem services

Water ecosystem services PDF Author: Martin-Ortega, Julia
Publisher: UNESCO Publishing
ISBN: 9231000683
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
"This comprehensive volume describes how ecosystem services-based approaches can assist in addressing major global and regional water challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and water security in the developing world, by integrating scientific knowledge from different disciplines, such as hydrological modelling, environmental economics, psychology and international law. Empirical assessments at the national, catchment and regional levels are used to critically appraise this systemic approach, and the merits and potential limitations are presented. The practicalities of this approach with regard to water resources management, nature conservation, and sustainable business practices are discussed, and the role of society in underpinning the concept of ecosystem services is explored. Presenting new insights and perspectives on how to shape future strategies, this contributory volume is a valuable reference for researchers, academics, students and policy makers, in environmental studies, hydrology, water resource management, ecology, environmental law, policy and economics, and conservation biology." -- Provided by publisher.
