Music played an exceptionally important role in the late Middle Ages - articulating people's social, psychological and eschatological needs. The process began with the training of choirboys whose skill was key to institutional identity. That skill was closely cultivated and directly sought by kings and emperors, who intervened directly in recruitment of choirboys and older singers in order to build and articulate their self-image and perceived status. Using the documentation of an exceptionally well preserved archive, this book focuses on music's functioning in an important church in late Medieval Northern France. It explores a period when musicians from this region set the agenda across Europe, developing what is still some of the most sophisticated music in the Western musical tradition. The integration of audible space is a central aspect of electroacoustic music. Ever since the earliest analogue days of electroacoustic music, pioneers of the genre - including Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luigi Nono - used special devices and methods for their compositions and refined the possibilities of integrating the sound of space into music. In this anthology, analytical portraits of compositions and groups of compositions show the wide spectrum of spatial practices in early electroacoustic music. Additionally, retrospective views on the use of spatial composition in earlier epochs and in instrumental music of the 20th century portray the practice of spatial composition in different eras and genres, as well as the universality of spatial music as a topic. This book traces Langlais' development from his early years of study at the National Institute for the Young Blind, through his long and active career as composer, church musician, and concert organist, and explores the impact that Langlais' hard work, determination, and talent have had on the musical world. It is divided into five major sections, including a biography, interviews, works and performances, a discography, and a bibliography. Listing 240 compositions written between 1927 and 1987, and containing a complete discography of both commercially produced and privately released recordings, the major portion of this volume is an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Langlais, with 536 entries, covering the years from 1926 to 1987, when he celebrated his eightieth birthday.
