In contrast to the role traditionally fulfilled by secular rulers, the pope has been perceived as an individual person existing in a body subject to decay and death, yet at the same time a corporeal representation of Christ and the Church, eternity and salvation. Using an array of evidence from the eleventh through the fifteenth centuries, Agostino Paravicini- Bagliani addresses this paradox. He studies the rituals, metaphors, and images of the pope's body as they developed over time and shows how they resulted in the expectation that the pope's body be simultaneously physical and metaphorical. Also included is a particular emphasis on the thirteenth century when, during the pontificate of Boniface VIII (1294-1303), the papal court became the focus of medicine and the natural sciences as physicians devised ways to protect the pope's health and prolong his life. Telle est la question à laquelle tente de répondre le présent ouvrage, dans le cadre d’une recherche résolument interdisciplinaire qui fait appel tour à tour aux sciences sociales, à l’histoire et à la poétique. « Littérature et développement » s’articule autour de quatre thèmes principaux dont chacun se trouve centré sur une notion clef : la notion de culture coloniale qui renvoie à la tentative opérée par le colonisateur pour introduire en Afrique non sa culture mais une culture spécifique ; la notion de travail de l’écrivain, lisible dans la façon dont l’écrivain de langue française réagit au réseau formé par les textes produits en Afrique ou à propos de l’Afrique et qui illustre un processus d’intertextualité ; la notion de discours sur la littérature, produit parallèlement aux œuvres de fiction et destiné non à décrire la littérature mais à dire ce qu’elle doit être ; enfin, la notion de pratique qui révèle que l’écrivain s’écarte en fait dans ses textes des prescriptions de ce discours prospectif et volontariste. Et c’est justement dans cet écart qu’il faut situer, selon l’auteur, la dimension proprement politique de cette littérature.
