Cet ouvrage réunit les actes du 43e colloque international de l'AFEAF, qui s'est tenu au Puy-en-Velay (Haute-Loire) du 30 mai au 1er juin 2019. Près de quarante ans après la rencontre de Bavay et Mons en 1982, qui avait alors posé les bases de la discipline, le colloque avait pour ambition de dresser un bilan des recherches actuelles sur les fortifications de l'âge du Fer en Europe. Celles-ci ont été abordées selon trois approches concentriques : l'architecture, la typologie et la fonction de leurs systèmes défensifs ; leur organisation, leur environnement immédiat et leur fonction ; et enfin leur insertion dans leur contexte spatial, social et chronologique. Les quarante contributions réunies dans ce volume sont issues de vingt-trois communications et dix-sept posters présentés pendant le colloque. Elles reflètent les avancées de la recherche sur le sujet. Le grand nombre de synthèses régionales rassemblées montre l'importance de la prise en compte de ces sites pour l'analyse des territoires protohistoriques. Les contributions thématiques soulignent également le renouvellement certain des problématiques abordées et des méthodes utilisées pour l'analyse des sites et des paysages fortifiés de l'âge du Fer.

While fortifications of the ancient cultures of the middle east and ancient Greek and Roman worlds were noticed by travelers and scholars from the very beginning of research on antiquity from the late 18th century onwards, the architectural, economic, logistical, political, urban and other social aspects of fortifications have been somewhat overlooked and underestimated by scholarship in the 20th century. The book presents the research of a new generation of scholars who have been analyzing those aspects of fortifications, many of them with years of experience in fieldwork on city walls. Much new evidence and a fresh look at this important category of built structure is now made available, and the publication will be of interest not only to the field of ancient architecture, but also to other sub-disciplines of archaeology and ancient history. The Later Prehistory of North-West Europe provides a unique, up-to-date, and easily accessible synthesis of the later prehistoric archaeology of north-west Europe, transcending political and language barriers that can hinder understanding. By surveying changes in social forms, landscape organization, monument types, and ritual practices over six millennia, the volume reassesses the prehistory of north-west Europe from the late Mesolithic to the end of the pre-Roman Iron Age.
