Les unités de recherche et développement occupent de plus en plus une place importante dans les entreprises industrielles. En effet, c'est en suivant de près l'évolution technologique et le progrès en général que les entreprises arrivent à assurer leur survie et à atteindre certains objectifs économiques et commerciaux. L'intégration des unités de R & D dans la structure organisationnelle de l'entreprise fait apparaître le besoin d'un système d'organisation approprié, d'autant plus que la fonction "recherche" et notamment le personnel scientifique présentent certaines particularités dans leur fonctionnement et dans leurs modalités de management. Cette étude porte essentiellement sur les problèmes d'organisation et de gestion des unités de R & D. L'objectif principal étant d'une part de dégager, à travers une analyse théorique et des observations "sur le terrain", des éléments de reflexion sur la bonne organisation et la gestion de ces unités et d'autre part, de constater parmi les facteurs influents ceux dont l'impact est le plus significatif. Le modèle utilisé et proposé à cette fin s'appuie sur l'approche réticulaire interactive du management de Gomez & Probst (1987), dont les principes généraux trouvent leur origine dans l'analyse systèmique. L'étude de la dynamique et la présentation des interdépendances entre les différents éléments d'organisation des unités de R & D, sous forme réticulaire, a permis de classer ces éléments selon la dimension de leur importance dans le système d'organisation. Ainsi, la "structure organisationnelle" de l'unité de recherche a été identifiée comme l'élément central du problème d'organisation. Toute action pertinente sur cet élément est suceptible de produire un effet de levier important en faveur d'une meilleure organisation de la R & D dans l'entreprise
