Les valeurs républicaines ne sont-elles pas déjà les valeurs de la démocratie ? Il conviendrait alors de mettre au centre la question du rapport à l'autre, la question du souci du faible, la réciprocité, la justice, la solidarité. Le véritable défi que pose aujourd'hui la pluralité culturelle à l'école ne peut en fait se résoudre en termes républicains, car le déni des références culturelles minoritaires est interprété comme un acte de disqualification. Il s'agirait plutôt de construire un pluralisme commun. J'entends par pluralisme commun l'idée que la diversité culturelle est un ensemble commun de ressources et de possibles et non une assignation à résidence communautaire. Conséquence importante : qui dit pluralisme commun implique que nous ne fassions plus de l'interculturel pour les seuls enfants d'immigrés, dans les ghettos urbains et scolaires. Les classes moyennes et les classes supérieures " blanches " ont autant besoin de comprendre, d'accepter et de réfléchir sur le rapport à l'autre. Cette construction d'un pluralisme commun ne peut donc plus s'appuyer sur une logique de censure ni sur une logique de ciblage, elle doit mettre en œuvre une logique commune d'ouverture.
