De l'élection de Pépin le Bref comme roi des Francs en 751 à la chute du dernier représentant de la dynastie carolingienne ayant régné en Francie occidentale, Louis V (986-987), les Carolingiens ont très largement été les maîtres du pouvoir en Occident. Héritiers de la civilisation germanique dont ils sont issus, continuateurs par certains aspects des Mérovingiens qui les ont précédés tout en cherchant à retrouver l'héritage de l'Empire romain dans sa version chrétienne, ils ont réussi à construire un système politique et culturel original. L'entente établie entre le pouvoir temporel et le pouvoir spirituel a contribué à cet essor, et la Renovatio carolingienne a bien été un moment fort de l'histoire de l'Occident médiéval. De plus, le regnum Francorum d'origine a laissé la place à l'Empire carolingien par le biais de la politique d'expansion (dilatatio regni). Toutefois, l'époque carolingienne n'est pas faite d'un seul bloc : à une phase ascendante, qui coïncide avec les règnes de Pépin le Bref, Charlemagne et Louis le Pieux à ses débuts, succède une période de crises et de difficultés, à partir de 825 environ. L'Empire carolingien à proprement parler s'est révélé éphémère (800-843) : le partage de Verdun marque l'échec définitif du rêve de reconstitution de l'Empire romain d'Occident tel qu'il existait avant 476. The origins of the large estate of Carolingian Europe and the role it played in the evolution of Frankish society and economy are the themes of this volume. The first group of articles focus on documentary evidence, especially the polyptychs and their interpretation. Though there is insufficient material for any true quantitive history, Professor Devroey argues that the evidence points to demographic expansion, coupled with the exploitation of new agricultural methods and crops, and a reliance on the family as the unit of production. Further studies relate these estates to the commercial networks of the area, from a local to an international level. A final concern is to demonstrate that the large estate formed a key component of the Carolingian rulers’ aim to establish the ’bonum commune’ and a stable society, with assured food supplies, regulated markets and a just system of weights and measures.
