Dans les années quatre-vingt-dix, la grammaire, terme polysémique, fait partie intégrante de l'enseignement/apprentissage du f.l.e après sa mise a l'écart de la classe de langue par l'approche communicative. la recherche en didactique, orientée vers la langue en communication, a intégré l'acte de parole, l'approche fonctionnelle/notionnelle, les besoins langagiers, renonciation et la grammaire de texte. elle a reconsidéré exercice, le métalangage, la réflexion sur la langue en construction, le rapport entre grammaire et vocabulaire, les documents authentiques et la progression. Ces éléments théoriques auraient du entrainer des transformations profondes dans l'enseignement/apprentissage de la grammaire. l'étude d'outils didactiques (grammaires théoriques, cahiers d'exercices, méthodes de langue) montre qu'ils ont intégré les innovations a des degrés divers. certaines approches témoignent d'un effort de réflexion pour parvenir a enseigner la grammaire autrement alors que d'autres restent relativement traditionnel les. cette hétérogénéité se retrouve dans les pratiques de classe. En effet, les enquêtes qualitatives ne nous ont pas permis de dégager de conclusions convergentes sur la manière d'enseigner/apprendre la grammaire. pour les enseignants, le pragmatisme est de rigueur... et les apprenants s'en satisfont. il est difficile de dresser un bilan global de l'enseignement/apprentissage de la grammaire en classe de f.l.e. elle est revenue au premier plan, mais l'éclectisme est de rigueur : chacun créé ses propres démarches grammaticales sans réelle cohérence. chercheurs, concepteurs de matériels didactiques et enseignants devraient collaborer afin de créer une dynamique propice a l'émergence d'idées nouvelles en la didactique de la grammaire.
