Book Description

The Evolution of Spanish
Author: Thomas A. Lathrop
Publisher: European Masterpieces
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
For a long time American students have needed an introductory Spanish historical grammar specifically written for them; the standard book on the subject, Menendez Pida's Manual de gramatica historica, was written around the turn of this century in Spain, when students were expected to know Latin. Most students of today have no background in Latin since the modern curriculum has placed emphasis elsewhere. In this standard manual, Lathrop offers a detailed preliminary chapter dealing with the basic facts of Classical Latin important to the development of Spanish, as well as a detailed picture of Vulgar Latin--the language of the masses. It was this spoken language which was the origin of Spanish. In the second chapter he explains the evolution of vowels and consonants from Vulgar Latin to Spanish, with numerous examples illustrating each point. In the third chapter, he shows how the various grammatical forms, most particularly nouns, adjectives and verbs, evolved from Vulgar Latin to Spanish, again with many examples of reach section. At the end of the volume there is a useful index of words, a detailed, updated bibliography, a translation of Latin words into English, and a general index.

Missionary Linguistics II / Lingüística misionera II
Author: Otto Zwartjes
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027285330
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 302
Book Description
This is the second volume to be dedicated to the pioneering linguistic work produced by the religious missionaries who, within the scope of the European colonial enterprises along the period 1550–1850, described dozens of autochthonous languages, many of which are only known today thanks to their endeavours. The twelve papers joint in the present volume — which dedicated special attention to the orthographical and phonological dimension of their work — provide a comprehensive picture of the descriptive problems faced by these linguists avant la lettre, notably: the difficulties faced before the less familiar features of these languages, such as vowel quantity, accentuation, tonality, nasalization, glottalization, ‘gutturalization’; the building of (re)definitions and the creation of a new metalanguage, like ‘saltillo’, ‘guturaciones’, etc.; The book elucidates the creativity and innovations proposed by individual missionaries and the instructive and pedagogical dimension of their work.

New Perspectives on Judeo-Spanish and the Linguistic History of the Sephardic Jews
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004685065
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
At the intersection of Jewish studies and linguistic research, the essays assembled in this book approach the topic of the languages of Sephardic Jews from different perspectives, spanning chronologically from the Middle Ages to the present day. Drawing on diverse sources – from medical glossaries to inquisition archives, from rabbinic responsa to recordings of today's speakers – the scholars collaborating on this project have endeavoured to reconstruct fragments of a complex and elusive linguistic reality, which over the centuries has been shaped by the historical experience of its speakers. An innovative collection of rigorously conducted synchronic and diachronic studies that contributes to expanding our knowledge and opening new perspectives on crucial issues, such as the effects of contact on the linguistic structures, the possibility of a norm for polycentric languages, the relationship between the lexicon of a language and the vitality of its speech community.

Current Trends in the Pragmatics of Spanish
Author: Rosina Márquez Reiter
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027295298
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 401
Book Description
Current Trends in the Pragmatics of Spanish provides the reader with a representative spectrum of current research in the most dynamic areas of the pragmatics of Spanish. It brings together a collection of academic essays written by well-established as well as emerging voices in Hispanic pragmatics. The essays include applications of pragmatic concepts to sub-fields of (Spanish) linguistics (i.e., pragmatics and grammar; pragmatics and applied linguistics; pragmatics and cross- and inter-cultural communication), studies of ‘traditional’ topics in pragmatics (i.e., discourse markers, politeness, metaphor, humour) as well as a proposal to amalgamate the dominant pragmatic approaches, namely socio-pragmatics and cognitive pragmatics, into one comprehensive model. The essays in this collection represent both new theoretical and empirical research and as such they constitute a valuable contribution to the field of pragmatics in general and an essential reference to those researching the pragmatics of Spanish.
