The storage and conversion of energy represents one of the major scientific challenges for coming decades with high stakes for the environment. Which new materials will enable the construction of more efficient and "cleaner" batteries? Jean-Marie Tarascon takes stock of these questions with their implications for our future and that of the planet. He notably discusses lithium-ion technology, the contribution of nanotechnologies and current research into using bio-inspired methods to develop material such as electrode material obtained from the biomass by scientists working in the field of "green chemistry."

Energy in the Development of New Caledonia

Energy in the Development of New Caledonia PDF Author: Yves le Bars
Publisher: IRD Editions
ISBN: 2709916924
Category : Political Science
Languages : fr
Pages : 474

Book Description

Electrochemical Energy Storage

Electrochemical Energy Storage PDF Author: Jean-Marie Tarascon
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118998146
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
The electrochemical storage of energy has become essential in assisting the development of electrical transport and use of renewable energies. French researchers have played a key role in this domain but Asia is currently the market leader. Not wanting to see history repeat itself, France created the research network on electrochemical energy storage (RS2E) in 2011. This book discusses the launch of RS2E, its stakeholders, objectives, and integrated structure that assures a continuum between basic research, technological research and industries. Here, the authors will cover the technological advances as well as the challenges that must still be resolved in the field of electrochemical storage, taking into account sustainable development and the limited time available to us.

The Voice and the Quill. The Paths of Canonization of the Quʾrān

The Voice and the Quill. The Paths of Canonization of the Quʾrān PDF Author: François Déroche
Publisher: Collège de France
ISBN: 2722605430
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 24

Book Description
How can we hope to understand Islam without knowing how its founding text, the Qurʾān, took shape and then crystalized? The discovery of a palimpsest in Sanaa in 1973 confirmed the existence of other recensions of the Qurʾānic text in the first centuries of Islam. Studies of these documents and of the manuscripts of the predominant transmission have made it possible to identify the various strata of texts and the variants that were gradually excluded. This unprecedented approach to the Qurʾān profoundly renews the intellectual and cultural history of the Muslim world.

The Dynamics of Living Systems

The Dynamics of Living Systems PDF Author: Thomas Lecuit
Publisher: Collège de France
ISBN: 2722605600
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
How can we explain the fundamental paradox of living matter, which combines stability and robustness of form with constant internal dynamics? It is not only the genetic information contained in every cell, but also numerous stochastic biomolecular processes that are at work in morphogenesis. In addition, the shaping of an organism is driven by mechanical forces that operate within and between cells, across tissues and organs. The dynamics of morphogenesis is a self-organized process that emerges from biological control and physical constraints at all scales. Its study is currently bringing together a fast-growing interdisciplinary community that observes, analyses and models living organisms.

Literatures of Medieval France

Literatures of Medieval France PDF Author: Michel Zink
Publisher: Collège de France
ISBN: 2722604396
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 20

Book Description
This long tradition would certainly not be a reason in itself to keep or restore the subject, had it not something to do with the subject itself. All of the associations between the past and literature, all of the signs that point towards an essential link between the notion of literature and a feeling for the past, are crystallized in medieval literature. The curiosity that medieval literature has aroused since it was rediscovered at the dawn of Romanticism presupposes such associations. The very forms of this literature bear indications of them. They encourage us to consider jointly the interest of modern times in the medieval past and the signs of the past with which the Middle Ages marked its own literature. Even more, they invite us to seek in the relationship with the past a defining criterion for literature, a most necessary task with reference to a time when words are not understood in their modern sense, and there is no guarantee that a corresponding notion exists. The best reason to continue with this hundred-and-fifty-year-old teaching is that its object may not even exist.

On the Origins of Global History

On the Origins of Global History PDF Author: Sanjay Subrahmanyam
Publisher: Collège de France
ISBN: 2722604353
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 23

Book Description
How does one think of history on a world scale? Should one turn to the intellectuals of the past or the historians of the present? Universal history as it was practised from Antiquity started to change from the sixteenth century in varied contexts, from East Asia to Spanish America. Applying his extensive knowledge of archives across the world and his command of languages and historiographic traditions of Asia, Europe and the Americas, Sanjay Subrahmanyam considers the history of networks and exchanges of goods, myths and ideologies from a new perspective. He works outside traditional geopolitical frameworks based on the nation-state model, to present global history as a field defined and redefined by “connected histories”.

Architecture, Modernity, Modernization

Architecture, Modernity, Modernization PDF Author: Jean-Louis Cohen
Publisher: Collège de France
ISBN: 2722605414
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 36

Book Description
The history of architecture constantly combines two perspectives: one is panoramic and turned towards urban ensembles so as to reveal social or technical policies, while the other looks in close shot at buildings, their interior, and their reflection of the ideals and engagement of their creators and occupants. By articulating the thoughts of twentieth-century theoreticians, philosophers, writers and architects (such as Mies van der Rohe, Wright, or Le Corbusier), Jean-Louis Cohen offers a new approach to architecture as a subject of inquiry and as a practice – one that is rooted in cultural history and in its human dimension.

Atomic and Molecular Physics

Atomic and Molecular Physics PDF Author: Claude Cohen-Tannoudji
Publisher: Collège de France
ISBN: 2722602814
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 19

Book Description
When physicists began to explore the world of atoms more precisely, as they endeavoured to understand its structure and the laws governing its behaviour, they soon encountered serious difficulties. Our intuitive concepts, based on our daily experience of the macroscopic world around us, proved to be completely erroneous on the atomic scale; the atom was incomprehensible within the framework of classical physics. In order to uncover these new mysteries, after a great deal of trial and error, entirely new concepts therefore had to be elaborated: the concepts of quantum physics. What are the main stages that have led us to this modern understanding of the atom? What is the present state of atomic physics? How has it contributed to the development of our knowledge and where is it heading?
