"De la conférence internationale de Berlin (1884-1885) aux accords d'Evian qui officialisent l'indépendance de l'Algérie (1962), la France est une importante puissance coloniale en Afrique. C'est l'objet du programme en histoire contemporaine au CAPES d'histoire-géographie, au CAPLP de lettres-histoire et à l'agrégation externe de géographie. Présente dès 1830 avec le début de la conquête de l'Algérie, la France accentue son impérialisme dans les années 1880 et 1890, moment de la "course au clocher" et du "partage" de l'Afrique entre les principales puissances européennes. Un véritable Empire colonial africain se construit, essentiellement par la guerre mais aussi par la diplomatie, faisant intervenir une multitude d'acteurs, tant en métropole qu'en Afrique. Au nom même de ses valeurs universalistes, la République élabore un projet colonial à la fin du XIXe siècle et forme progressivement un État colonial, outil essentiel à la mise en œuvre d'un ordre colonial, que les Français tentent de pérenniser sur la durée. Mais il faut aussi compter avec les Africains et les Africaines, acteurs à part entière des sociétés dans lesquelles ils vivent et de cet ordre colonial. Ils montrent, à de multiples reprises, leur capacité à s'organiser, se mobiliser et lutter, y compris à de vastes échelles dans le cadre de circulations continentales, impériales voire mondiales. Ces luttes s'accroissent particulièrement au lendemain des deux guerres mondiales, alors que la France semble incapable de rénover son projet colonial et de repenser ses relations avec les populations colonisées." --

Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently.
