The Decorated School

The Decorated School PDF Author: Catherine Burke
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 104

Book Description
The Decorated School: Essays on Visual Culture of Schooling is a new multi-text publication discussing the relationships between architects, artists and educators, specifically through the art which became an integral part of the fabric of educational buildings and their immediate environments in the twentieth century. The Decorated School Research network is an Arts and Heritage Research Council-funded initiative led by Dr Catherine Burke of the University of Cambridge and Dr Jeremy Howard of the University of St Andrews. The network holds seminars and conferences focussed on discourses within structural arts in schools, the planning behind them, and the ideas about education and childhood conveyed through the works. The book maintains a multi-national focus, with essays on subjects as geographically varied as the Edinburgh Schools Beautiful Scheme of the 1930s; the shaping of Chicago schools through murals in the early 20th century; Asger Jorn’s school decoration in Aarhus Statsgymnasium, Denmark, 1959-61; Soviet and Post-Soviet decorations and impressions in the context of School 6, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; and Colorism in 1950s in Hertfordshire schools. The Decorated School: Essays on Visual Culture of Schooling is a beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully revealing take on a familiar--if little discussed--topic. The book is edited by Dr Catherine Burke, Dr Jeremy Howard and Decorated School Research network participant Peter Cunningham.

A Source Book of Royal Commissions and Other Major Governmental Inquiries in Canadian Education, 1787-1978

A Source Book of Royal Commissions and Other Major Governmental Inquiries in Canadian Education, 1787-1978 PDF Author: Cary F. Goulson
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 148759772X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 428

Book Description
This is a comprehensive primary reference to a rich and often neglected storehouse of information on Canada's educational background. As the boundary between full-fledged royal commissions and other official governmental inquiries is not always clear -- and many legislative committee inquiries and special department of education investigations have been as significant in educational development as regular commissions -- Goulson has included all major ministerial-level governmental inquiries in Canadian education between 1787 and 1978. More than 300 inquiries are included, among them general, special interest, judicial, legislative, parliamentary, and other governmental committees. The information provided for each includes the type of commission or committee, its size, chairman, purpose, dates of appointment and reporting, and primary source references, as well as a selection of its major conclusions and/or recommendations. Official governmental records and documents including the Reports themselves, Legislative Journals, House Debates and Hansard, Sessional Papers, Statutes, and Department of Education records were used as the resource base. This volume will be of specific interest to teachers and students of the history of education, and most educators, no matter what their fields, will find it useful.

ISBN: 1550567667
Category : Music
Languages : en

Book Description
What challenges face Canadian music education in the coming decades? The happy convergence of a new millennium, the 40th Anniversary of the Canadian Music Educators' Association/l'Association Canadienne des Educateurs de Musique (in 1999), and ISME 2000 in Edmonton, prompted the CMEA/ACEM to initiate a national dialogue about the future of Canadian music education. Looking Forward, edited by two of Canada's leading scholars in music education, Betty Hanley and Brian A. Roberts, is the result. Addressing a broad range of topics and educational levels, the book provides a provocative and thoughtful look at opportunities and challenges identified by fourteen articulate and well-informed authors who represent diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. Cultural Policy, Work and Identity

Cultural Policy, Work and Identity PDF Author: Jonathan Paquette
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317156307
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
How have cultural policies created new occupations and shaped professions? This book explores an often unacknowledged dimension of cultural policy analysis: the professional identity of cultural agents. It analyses the relationship between cultural policy, identity and professionalism and draws from a variety of cultural policies around the world to provide insights on the identity construction processes that are at play in cultural institutions. This book reappraises the important question of professional identities in cultural policy studies, museum studies and heritage studies. The authors address the relationship between cultural policy, work and identity by focusing on three levels of analysis. The first considers the state, the creativity of the power relationship established in cultural policies and the power which structures the symbolic order of cultural work. The second presents community in the cultural policy process, society and collective action, whether it is through the creation of institutions for arts and heritage profession or through resistance to state cultural policies. The third examines the experience of cultural policy by the professional. It illustrates how cultural policy is both a set of contingencies that shape possibilities for professionals, as much as it is a basis for identification and identity construction. The eleven authors in this unique book draw on their experience as artists and researchers from a range of countries, including France, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, and Sweden.
