Polar Law Textbook

Polar Law Textbook PDF Author: Nordic Council of Ministers
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289320567
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
The idea for this textbook developed from the recognition of the need to disseminate information about Polar Law as an emerging field of legal studies - an area of study long overdue greater recognition. Developments in the Polar Regions - the Arctic and Antarctica - are now the subject of growing interest and importance. They concern a divergent range of global and regional development issues and beg further inquiry into the role of law in dealing with many of these issues. This textbook is the first educational material of its kind. It attempts to illustrate the importance of legal values in addressing various challenges across the Nordic region, among remote Arctic communities and globally. The textbook focuses on the various developments in international and domestic law concerning the Polar Regions (e.g., issues of environmental law, law of the sea, resources, human rights law and Indigenous peoples' rights, etc.). By looking at linkages between different areas of law and the other social sciences, the textbook also explores the relevant aspects of the economic, social and political developments affecting both Polar areas (e.g., questions of Polar governance, economics, and the political situation in some of the Arctic areas)

Racialization, Racism, and Anti-Racism in the Nordic Countries

Racialization, Racism, and Anti-Racism in the Nordic Countries PDF Author: Peter Hervik
Publisher: Palgrave MacMillan
ISBN: 9783030090401
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
This book represents a comprehensive effort to understand discrimination, racialization, racism, Islamophobia, anti-racist activism, and the inclusion and exclusion of minorities in Nordic countries. Examining critical media events in this heavily mediatized society, the contributors explore how processes of racialization take place in an environment dominated by commercial interests, anti-migrant and anti-Muslim narratives and sentiments, and a surprising lack of informed research on national racism and racialization. Overall, in tracing how these individual events further racial inequalities through emotional and affective engagement, the book seeks to define the trajectory of modern racism in Scandinavia.

From Memory to Marble

From Memory to Marble PDF Author: Elizabeth Rankin
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110668785
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
For the first time, the 92-metre frieze of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, one of the largest historical narratives in marble, has been made the subject of a book. The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the 'Great Trek' (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Conceptualising the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The book considers the active role the Monument played in the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and the development of apartheid, as well as its place in post-apartheid heritage. The frieze is unique in that it provides rare evidence of the complex processes followed in creating a major monument. Based on unpublished documents, drawings and models, these processes are unfolded step by step, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze, through all the stages of its design, to its shipping to post-war Italy to be copied into marble from Monte Altissimo, up to its final installation in the Monument. The book examines how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount, and the forms in which it is depicted. The second volume expands on the first, by investigating each of the twenty-seven scenes of the frieze in depth, providing new insights into not only the frieze, but also South Africa’s history. François van Schalkwyk of African Minds, co-publisher with De Gruyter writes: From Memory to Marble is an open access monograph in the true sense of the word. Both volumes of the digital version of the book are available in full and free of charge from the date of publication. This approach to publishing democratises access to the latest scholarly publications across the globe. At the same time, a book such as From Memory to Marble, with its unique and exquisite photographs of the frieze as well as its wealth of reproduced archival materials, demands reception of a more traditional kind, that is, on the printed page. For this reason, the book is likewise available in print as two separate volumes. The printed and digital books should not be seen as separate incarnations; each brings its own advantages, working together to extend the reach and utility of From Memory to Marble to a range of interested readers.

From Camp to City

From Camp to City PDF Author: Manuel Herz
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783037782910
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"What happens when temporary architectural structures become permanent? 'From Camp to City' provides an in-depth analysis on the topic. Examining the theme of the refugee camp in the context of urbanism and architecture, the book offers extensive documentation of an urban "borderline case" in the form of the Sahrawi refugee camps in the Algerian desert - temporary spaces of transit that have become more and more permanent in recent decades. In contrast to the predominant understanding of the refugee camps as being either humanitarian or dystopian, 'From Camp to City' investigates how people live and dwell in these informal exterritorial spaces, work, move around, and enjoy themselves. It documents how the camp, instead of being a place of misery, can also be understood as a potential political project. Numerous images and texts on all aspects of life illustrate the emergence of urban structures and the way architecture becomes involved in the underlying political conflict." -- Back cover

Housing and the Financial Crisis

Housing and the Financial Crisis PDF Author: Edward L. Glaeser
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226030586
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Conventional wisdom held that housing prices couldn’t fall. But the spectacular boom and bust of the housing market during the first decade of the twenty-first century and millions of foreclosed homeowners have made it clear that housing is no different from any other asset in its ability to climb and crash. Housing and the Financial Crisis looks at what happened to prices and construction both during and after the housing boom in different parts of the American housing market, accounting for why certain areas experienced less volatility than others. It then examines the causes of the boom and bust, including the availability of credit, the perceived risk reduction due to the securitization of mortgages, and the increase in lending from foreign sources. Finally, it examines a range of policies that might address some of the sources of recent instability.
