Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Physiology of Plants The absence of any text-book in the English language treating at all fully of the Physiology of Plants, so as to meet the requirements of advanced students, sug gested to me, at an early stage in my career as a teacher of the subject, that I should publish my own lecture-notes just sufficiently expanded to make them readable. Of this suggestion, this volume is the out come. The work of preparation began in 1877, but, on account of the pressure of other duties, it was not until 1882 that it had proceeded far enough to warrant going to press. I hoped at that time to have com pleted the Lectures within a twelvemonth at longest, but failing health and increasing demands upon my time have extended the period to four years. In con sequence of this delay, it will be found that in the earlier Lectures the most recent researches have not been noticed. There will, I hope, be an opportunity to remedy this defect in a subsequent edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Plant Cell Biology

Plant Cell Biology PDF Author: Randy O. Wayne
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 012814372X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 748

Book Description
Plant Cell Biology, Second Edition: From Astronomy to Zoology connects the fundamentals of plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant growth and development, plant taxonomy, plant biochemistry, plant molecular biology, and plant cell biology. It covers all aspects of plant cell biology without emphasizing any one plant, organelle, molecule, or technique. Although most examples are biased towards plants, basic similarities between all living eukaryotic cells (animal and plant) are recognized and used to best illustrate cell processes. This is a must-have reference for scientists with a background in plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant growth and development, plant taxonomy, and more. - Includes chapter on using mutants and genetic approaches to plant cell biology research and a chapter on -omic technologies - Explains the physiological underpinnings of biological processes to bring original insights relating to plants - Includes examples throughout from physics, chemistry, geology, and biology to bring understanding on plant cell development, growth, chemistry and diseases - Provides the essential tools for students to be able to evaluate and assess the mechanisms involved in cell growth, chromosome motion, membrane trafficking and energy exchange

Book Description
Excerpt from The Ferns (Filicales) Treated Comparatively With a View to Their Natural Classification, Vol. 1: Analytical Examination of the Criteria of Comparison Little do ye know your own blessedness; for to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour. R. L. Stevenson, Essay on El Dorado. IN this passage Stevenson enunciates a truth that applies with singular force to those who enter on morphological enquiry. To travel hopefully is the chosen pursuit of all who study large groups of organisms with a view to reducing them to order, so as to throw light on their origin and evolution. In such quests no one need expect under present conditions to arrive at the final destination of complete and assured knowledge. If any one should indulge this hope his disappointment is certain. Even if he did so arrive, and found himself able fully to demonstrate the whole truth, how greatly would the quest lose in its interest. It is in the pursuit of his El Dorado of evolutionary history, not in the arrival there, that the true blessedness of the morphologist lies. It behoves then those who travel on this journey not to hurry unduly, but to consider with critical care the manner of their journeying, rather than to seek short cuts to an elusive goal. The Restless Plant

The Restless Plant PDF Author: Dov Koller
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674059433
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Plants, so predictable, stay where they are. And yet, like all living things, they also move: they grow, adapt, shed leaves and bark, spread roots and branches, snare pollinators, and reward cultivators. This book, the first to thoroughly explore the subject since Darwin’s 1881 treatise on movements in plants, is a comprehensive, up-to-date account of the mechanisms and the adaptive values that move plants. Drawing on examples across the spectrum of plant families—including mosses, ferns, conifers, and flowering plants—the author opens a window on how plants move: within cells, as individual cells, and via organs. Opening with an explanation of how cellular motors work and how cells manage to move organs, Dov Koller considers the movement of roots, tubers, rhizomes, and other plant parts underground, as well as the more familiar stems, leaves, and flowers. Throughout, Koller presents information at the subcellular and cellular levels, including the roles of receptors, signaling pathways, hormones, and physiological responses in motor function. He also discusses the adaptive significance of movements. His book exposes the workings of a world little understood and often overlooked, the world of restless plants and the movements by which they accomplish the necessary functions of their lives.
