Book Description
Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The animal nature of man has, tmtil within a comparatively re cent period, held the chief sway in all political relations, and the settlement of political disputes. By the animal nature is here simply meant the impulses which lead to the love of acquisition and the glory of the battle-field, - both as purely animal impulses as any that mark the beasts that perish; both happily, now, though only very recently, reduced, in all most civilized comma nitiea under subjection to the moral and intellectual nature of man. Hence, in such political histories, battles and their details are too ti'equent. Nations, until a very recent period, have ia variably had recourse, in the settlement of all disputes, to the barbarous form of wager of battle, to decide the right, although, by the express laws of almost every nation in Europe, wag-sr of battle between individuals has been long abolished. It is extra ordinary that so barbarous and absurd a custom should have been thus so inconsistently persevered in, in the one case, while it has been abolished in the Other. The public mind in England is, however, at the present time, in general, as much opposed to the appeal to this antiquated ordeal in the one case as the other; and it is to be hoped that the page of the future historian will abound chie y in details of the moral and intellectual history of that as well as other nations; and that the history of society, of science, and of literature, will take high precedence of the his tory of politics. Meantime, the history of the politics of every nation must be studied by 'all who would observe the advance of nations, or truly understand their actual condition. More especially is that study important in respect of those nations where, as in England, the struggle between general independence and assumed individual prerogative, has been long continued and eventful, though crowned at last with noble and glorious success. Book Description
Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 1 Confessor, who takes care of the king's con science, and imposes very hard penances upon him when he has sinned. But for some time past, our kings have been accustomed to turn their chaplains really to good use, by employing them constantly as their writing clerks. In this capacity the most irnportant matters of public business must pass through their hands. Hence they have much power, and a power which was 'totally unknown to our ancestors; and in this innovating age, their influence has been greatly 'increased by a fashion which our good king Edward has brought from France. He has caused a great seal to be made, on which you may see his effigy, in his imperial robes; and to all the writs or written letters, which issue in his name, an impression from that seal is appended. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 3 My situation I conceive to be favourable for the disco very and delivery of truth in history. I belong to no sect or party, in religion or politics. A member of the Church of England, I give it in my mind a moderate preference to any other, without taking on me to assert that it is ab solutely the best; in politics, it is to me personally a mat ter of perfect indifl'erence what party has the disposal of the patronage of the state, for place or pension I neither desire nor want, and would not accept. Perhaps this forms as near an approach as may be to the paradoxical character of a good historian - that il ne faudroit etre d'aucune te ligion, d'auctm pays, d'aucune profession, d'aucun parti. History of England, Vol. 1 of 13 PDF Author: John Lingard

Book Description
Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 1 of 13: From the First Invasion by the Romans Among these sources of historical information there is one, which deserves his peculiar attention; the confidential correspondence of persons in high and official situations. This offers to him the most valu able assistance. It removes the veil which policy has drawn before the counsels of princes, reveals the secret springs which set in motion the machinery of government, and exhibits kings and ministers in their true characters, not as they affect to appear to the public eye, but as they really were in the privacy of their own houses, and in the circle of their familiar acquaintances. Without such documents history is an inert and spiritless mass; from these it may de rive both life and vigour. Book Description
Excerpt from The Industrial and Commercial History of England, Vol. 1: Lectures Delivered to the University of Oxford An acquaintance with the main theories of the older economists is sufficient for the schools. Let the Professor of Political Economy teach what he will, even the undergraduates who seek honours in the history school, soon drop away. In this way it came about that these lectures were attended by an extremely small audience. Had the Professor Of Political Economy given these lectures in some industrial centre, hundreds of workmen would, I believe, have paid to listen to them. But in the home of learning, some dozen men of education attended lectures thrown open, free, to every member of the University. If any apology were needed for the publication of this book.
